Soriano opts out of last year of deal with Yankees

NEW YORK (AP) ? Reliever Rafael Soriano opted out of the final year of a three-year, $35 million contract with the New York Yankees on Wednesday and will likely seek a long-term deal in free agency.

The move was expected after the right-hander had 42 saves and a 2.26 ERA while filling in for closer Mariano Rivera this season after baseball's saves leader tore a knee ligament in early May.

"I'm not surprised because (agent) Scott Boras told me he was confident he could get him 15 times four (years), $60 million. If that's the case, it would be a good deal for Soriano," Yankees president Randy Levine told The Associated Press. "I hope that's what's real in the marketplace."

Soriano was set to make $14 million next season. Instead, New York will pay him a $1.5 million buyout. The Yankees can make him a qualifying offer of $13.3 million before Friday's deadline, and if Soriano signs with another team, they will get draft compensation.

Soriano, who will be 33 in December, signed his hefty contract with New York before the 2011 season after notching a career-high 45 saves with Tampa Bay. Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner overruled general manager Brian Cashman in making the deal. Cashman was opposed to giving closer money to a setup man.

The one-time All-Star had an injury-plagued first season with New York and he ended up getting the bulk of his work in the seventh inning, falling behind youngster David Robertson in the bullpen.

But when Rivera went down, and Robertson struggled as the replacement stopper before going on the disabled list, Soriano slipped comfortably into the role.

Soriano's possible departure further complicates the Yankees' bullpen for 2013. Rivera, who will turn 43 in November, vowed right after his injury to return next year, but recently said he isn't sure whether he will play again.

In other Yankees news, infielder Casey McGehee opted for free agency rather than accepting a minor league assignment. McGehee hit .151 (8 for 53) in 22 games with the Yankees after being acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 31.

Rule 5 Draft pick Brad Meyers, a right-handed pitcher, was returned to the Washington Nationals. Meyers missed the entire season because of a labrum strain.

Syrian warplanes strike strategic town as opposition leader voices doubt in proposed truce

BEIRUT - Syrian warplanes struck a strategic rebel-held town in the country's north in an attempt to reopen a key supply route Tuesday, three days before the U.N.-proposed start of a truce that appears increasingly unlikely to take hold.

The U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, has suggested that both sides in Syria's 19-month-old conflict lay down their arms during Eid al-Adha, a four-day Muslim holiday that begins Friday. However, neither Syrian President Bashar Assad nor rebels fighting to topple him have committed to a truce, and Brahimi has not explained in public how such a truce would be monitored.

Activists reported clashes between regime forces and rebels in several areas of Syria on Tuesday. One of the heaviest battles raged in Maaret al-Numan, a town that straddles the main highway between Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial hub, and the capital Damascus.

Opposition fighters seized the town earlier this month, and their presence there has hampered the regime's ability to send supplies and reinforcements to northwestern Syria, including Aleppo, where government troops are bogged down in a bloody fight for control of the city.

On Tuesday, Syrian warplanes attacked Maaret al-Numan and the village of Mar Shamsheh, as troops and rebels battled over a nearby Syrian military camp that has been under siege for days, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist group.

Amateur video posted Monday showed rebel fighters unleashing heavy bursts of machine-gun fire toward a convoy heading to the besieged army camp. Syria restricts access to foreign reporters and the authenticity of the video could not be independently confirmed.

The Syrian uprising erupted in March 2011 as a popular uprising against the Assad regime and has since escalated into a full-blown civil war.

More than 34,000 people have been killed in the past 19 months, said Rami Abdul-Rahman, the head of the Observatory, which relies on a network of activists on the ground. This figure includes civilians and rebel fighters, but also more than 8,000 regime soldiers, he said.

Abdul-Rahman said there were no signs on the ground that rebels or government troops were preparing to halt fighting during Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice. "Until we see evidence on the ground, it means it's a dream only," he said of the proposed truce.

The head of the Syrian National Council, the main Syrian opposition group in exile, said chances for a cease-fire are slim.

SNC chief Abdelbaset Sieda told The Associated Press on Tuesday that rebel fighters are willing to halt fighting during the holiday, but will respond if attacked. He said he doubts the regime will honour the cease-fire and that Brahimi's plan is too vague.

"Brahimi hasn't any mechanism to observe the situation," Sieda said by phone from Stockholm, Sweden. "Now he is saying every side can do that (halt fighting) by itself."

In Damascus, Syria's deputy foreign minister, Faisal Mekdad, said the Assad regime is co-operating with Brahimi. "We are always optimistic," he said when asked about the chances of a cease-fire.

However, Brahimi said after a visit to Damascus on Sunday that he did not get a commitment to the truce from the regime.

The relentless fighting in Syria has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee the country to escape the violence.

The U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday that Lebanon has become the third Syrian neighbour to host more than 100,000 refugees from Syria's civil war.

At least 101,283 people have registered as refugees in Lebanon, said agency spokeswoman Melissa Fleming. This compares to more than 105,000 in Jordan, at least 101,000 in Turkey, more than 42,000 in Iraq and 6,800 in North Africa.

Governments bordering Syria estimate tens of thousands more Syrian refugees have not yet registered, including an estimated 70,000 in Turkey who live outside refugee camps, she said.

Jordan alone says it hosting some 210,000 Syrian refugees, which Amman says has strained the country's health care, water and electricity sectors.

The closed captioning on a large screen at the Rhode Island Convention Center transcribed the remark as "f*** it."

Some in the audience also believed the Dalai Lama, who has a strong accent, had used a profane phrase. Questions have arisen previously over the same comment in other venues.?

The Dalai Lama is interviewed by NBC's Ann Curry during his October 2012 visit to New York. In the interview he discusses the more than 50 Tibetans who have set fire to themselves in search of religious freedom.

The Dalai Lama has been visiting various cities over the last month.

There has long been a movement to defend the overweight from a prevailing lack of understanding. And, alas, that defense seems to be needed.

The evidence of obesity bias in our culture is abundant and pervasive, and can be found from playground to boardroom. We have historically done a poor job of attacking the problem of obesity without attacking those burdened by the problem of obesity.

The defense has come in the form of professionals who highlight the pernicious effects of bias. It has come in the form of organizations, such as NAAFA, the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance. In my own case, it comes in the form of the National Exchange for Weight Loss Resistance, which I launched to help spread the word that some people can eat well, be active, and still never get to thin.

There has long been some okay-at-any-size support from Hollywood and Madison Avenue, as well. The Dove ads for women with ?normal? curves are already classics. Oprah has emoted on the topic. Plus-size models can do quite well. And Queen Latifah has brought her inimitable ?what you see is what you get, if you?re lucky? brand of gumption to the issue.

Apparently, though, we?ve entered a new stage of evolution on the topic. The New York Times recently reported that a whole new cadre of celebrities prone to the same obesigenic influences as the rest of us are simply shrugging their shoulders, and letting it all hang out. In some cases, quite literally ? by exposing the expanding epidermis in question.

So ?okay at any size? seems to be gathering pop culture momentum. And I regret to say, I can?t be entirely okay with that. It?s not the size I?m not okay with ? it?s the consequences.

Epidemic obesity is not just a reason we have epidemic diabetes ? it is the reason. It is the reason why the CDC is projecting that as many as 1 in 3 of us may be diabetic by mid-century, at a cost the nation is unlikely to find manageable.

Newsweek, the U.S. weekly news magazine that's been in publication since 1933, today announced it would be going all-digital beginning in early 2013. The last print version will be the December 31, 2012 edition, and the company will rename its publication "Newsweek Global" when it goes digital-only, targeted web and app delivery.

Yankees' slump defies explanation

DETROIT (AP) ? If there were a quick and easy solution, surely this bunch would have figured it out by now.

Alex Rodriguez has over 600 home runs. Curtis Granderson hit 43 during the regular season. Robinson Cano is one of the best all-around players in the game.

The three of them are trapped in the throes of batting slumps at the worst possible time, and the rest of the New York Yankees haven't been much better.

"There is no explanation sometimes in baseball," first baseman Mark Teixeira said.

Put it this way: How is it possible that St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter, a career .118 hitter, has as many hits in the last two postseasons as A-Rod? More extra-base hits for Carpenter, too.

Like a golfer with the shanks during a major tournament, the Yankees have looked helpless at the plate in the biggest games of the season. They were hitting .205 in these playoffs as they prepared for Game 3 of the AL championship series Tuesday night. New York lost the first two games to the Detroit Tigers.

Shortstop Derek Jeter is injured, and aside from unsung outfielder Raul Ibanez and Teixeira, New York's power hitters have seemed lost. It's the type of October swoon that can derail a season, and no team is ever really safe.

"It's a tough game. No matter what kind of career ? what kind of lineup you throw out there ? you're going to have those times when it's not clicking," said St. Louis manager Mike Matheny, whose team is playing San Francisco in the NLCS. "You've just got to battle through those times, because they're bound to happen."

Rodriguez is 3 for 23 in the playoffs. Over the last two postseasons, he has five hits ? the same number as Carpenter. Manager Joe Girardi has pinch hit for A-Rod late in games and left him out of the starting lineup Tuesday for the second time in less than a week.

Granderson is 3 for 26 in these playoffs. Cano's collapse is even more startling. The second baseman finished the regular season on a 24-for-39 tear, but he's 2 for 32 since then and was hitless in his last 26 at-bats entering Tuesday, a record for a single postseason.

Nick Swisher (4 for 26) and Russell Martin (5 for 26) aren't producing either, and Swisher was also out of the starting lineup Tuesday. The Yankees won a key game in the division series against Baltimore when Ibanez hit a pair of late homers, and he hit another in Game 1 versus Detroit during a four-run ninth inning against struggling closer Jose Valverde. That was the only real highlight for the New York offense lately.

"To have that many guys and that many good hitters, sure it's surprising. I'm sure it's frustrating for them to have that happen to them," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. "You're always going to see good pitching this time of year, you understand that, but for them to have that many struggles, I think they're a little surprised."

In the regular season, patience is a virtue. Streaks and slumps have time to even out over the course of 162 games. A player can start poorly but finish the year with his usual impressive statistics, the way Albert Pujols did.

"You know the Yankees are going to break out here at some point," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "That is just a matter of fact."

Maybe so, but they can't afford to wait much longer.

"The team's not going to be too high or too low during the regular season, but in the postseason you have five or seven games, everything is magnified," Teixeira said. "A two-game losing streak during the regular season, no one even talks about. But two games in a row in a seven-game series is a big deal, so we have a big hole to dig ourselves out of."

The worst postseason batting average by a team that played at least seven games is .195, shared by the 1956 Brooklyn Dodgers and 1965 Minnesota Twins, according to STATS, LLC.

The 1974 Oakland Athletics won the World Series despite hitting .198 in the postseason. The 1962 Yankees did as well, even though Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris were a combined 7 for 48.

Perhaps the most encouraging historical memory for the Yankees comes from another of their championship seasons. In 1996, New York was shut down by Atlanta in the first two games of the World Series. At that point, the Braves had won five straight games by a combined score of 48-2.

Then the Yankees took the next four and won the title.

"It's just baseball. Things turn in a matter of a heartbeat," Granderson said. "It's amazing how things tend to go that way ? from the good side to the bad side, from the bad side to the good side."
