NJ Dems pitch in to help charity home - Blogs - NorthJersey.com

With the official work of the convention not set to start until tomorrow, some members of the New Jersey delegation in Charlotte, N.C., spent some time helping to build half a house.
The half built by Democratic volunteers will be joined with the other half, built last week by volunteers at the Republican convention in Tampa, Fla. The final home will be awarded to a military family in October.
Lucinda Florio, wife of former Gov. Jim Florio, said the project brought back memories of the party convention in Atlanta in 1988, when she and her husband helped out at a Habitat for Humanity project.

?I remember seeing the house, meeting the family that was going to occupy it,? she said before she entered the house and held a ladder while Metuchen Councilwoman Dorothy Rasmussen painted trim over a window in the living room. ?That?s what we?re all about. We?re about community, we?re about helping, about volunteering.?
Behind them, congressional candidate and Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula of Franklin Township and state Sen. Donald Norcross of Camden County peeled masking tape from around a window frame that had been painted a few hours earlier.
Democratic State Chairman John Wisniewski showed up with his wife, Debbie, and their three teen-age daughters, and may have gotten a little added work for himself. As he he started loading up a roller with paint to cover the walls over the kitchen cabinets, Debbie Wisniewski admitted she was thinking of other jobs around the house he now might be assigned.
When completed, the single-story house will have three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The project is a joint effort between Sears? Craftsmen tool line and the groups Rebuilding Together, Heroes at Home and NextGen Home.
?We have nearly 200 affiliates, separate nonprofits, that help 10,000 homeowners a year,? Matt de Ferranti, Rebuilding Together?s Washington lobbyist, told the New Jersey group before they had their safety training. Projects usually involve repairs or maintenance, and they have done some in in Bergen County, but did not have details.
?Our typical client has annual income of about $18,500 for a household of two or three people,? de Ferranti said. ?They?ve been in their homes for 20 years. These are your friends and neighbors who are trying to make their mortgage, and need our help to stay in their homes.?
