Doctoral student developing next generation of lithium-ion batteries for longer lasting mobile devices, electric cars

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Sometimes even batteries can use a boost of energy, according to the focus of a Kansas State University graduate student's research.

Steven Arnold Klankowski, a doctoral candidate in chemistry, La Crescent, Minn., is working under Jun Li, professor of chemistry, to develop new materials that could be used in future lithium-ion batteries. The materials look to improve the energy storage capacity of batteries so that laptops, cellphones, electric cars and other mobile devices will last longer between charges.

Additionally, lithium-ion batteries that can store energy and deliver power more rapidly will be a more viable alternative power source for vehicles and machines powered by alternative energy, Klankowski said. For example, solar- and wind-powered technologies could switch to the battery in the evening when there is a lack of wind or sunlight to produce energy.

"The battery market is moving very fast these days as everyone is trying to get an advantage for their electric vehicles and cellphones," said Klankowski, who also has a background in materials engineering. "As our devices get smarter, so must our methods to supply greater amounts of portable electrical energy to power these devices."

For his research, Klankowski is developing and testing a high-performance nanostructure of silicon coated onto carbon nanofibers for the use as an electrode in lithium-ion batteries. The electrodes, which look like a dense brush, give the battery greater charge capabilities and storage capacity. This is anticipated to replace current commercial electrodes that are made from simple carbon-based materials.

The material being developed and improved by Klankowski helps the electrode store roughly 10 times the amount of energy as current electrodes -- giving the batteries a 10-15 percent improvement in current battery technology.

"We're trying to go for higher energy capacity," Klankowski said. "To do that we're looking at if we can store more energy per the electrode's size or mass, and if we can use that energy more quickly to make the battery like a capacitor. Batteries and capacitors are on opposite sides of the energy storage field. We'd like to move them both closer together."

In the lab, Klankowski looks at how the characteristics of the lithium-silicon-alloy material differ with each production cycle and how those characteristics can be improved to move lithium-ion batteries closer to capacitors.

The material is also studied for its ability to store energy. Tests, which simulate a battery's operation, repeatedly charge and discharge the material with energy.

According to U.S. Department of Energy's requirements, a battery must remain at 80 percent capacity after 300 charge-discharge cycles.

"A battery today tends to die after 400-500 cycles or three years," Klankowski said. "One of the things we'll want to improve on is that lasting performance. It won't be much of an advantage if your phone's battery can last for 36 hours for the first few months but then only two hours after that. With the progress we are seeing, I hope one day to drive from Manhattan to my folks' house in Minnesota on a single battery change."

A patent application for the material has been filed with Kansas State University Research Foundation. The foundation is a nonprofit corporation responsible for managing technology transfer activities at the university.

Klankowski was one of five doctoral students at Kansas State University to recently earn a scholarship from the research foundation to help him further develop his research.

Taking the battle against the toxic trio beyond 'Leaves of three, leave it be'

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? With more than half of all adults allergic to poison ivy, oak and sumac, scientists are reporting an advance toward an inexpensive spray that could reveal the presence of the rash-causing toxic oil on the skin, clothing, garden tools, and even the family cat or dog. Using the spray, described in ACS' The Journal of Organic Chemistry would enable people to wash off the oil, or avoid further contact, in time to sidestep days of misery.

Rebecca Braslau and colleagues explain that allergic reactions to oils of the toxic trio are more than a nusiance. They claim a huge human and economic toll, accounting for thousands of medical visits, days lost from work and school and sheer misery for the victims. It takes only 0.04th of a drop of the plants' oil to trigger a reaction, and the oil is invisible. The scientists thus sought to begin developing a way to make the oil visible, so that people can do a reality check after venturing into outdoor areas where the toxic plants grow.

They describe development of a spray that, when applied to leaves of poison ivy, oak and sumac, reacts with urushiol, the toxic oil produced by those plants. When exposed to an ordinary fluorescent light, the spray glows if urushiol is present, revealing the location of the oil. "This constitutes the groundwork for the future development of a spray to detect urushiol to avoid contact dermatitis," the scientists say.

The authors acknowledge funding from the University of California Santa Cruz Committee on Research.

Finding Out What'S Right for YOU ? Health Coaching | Weight Loss ...

?

Article by Julie-Ann Amos

The newspapers, magazines television news broadcasts and even the internet contain on a daily basis some information or other about how our Health and well-being are threatened. Yet, the message the research, pop-science and advice are giving is very confusing and even contradictory. You should or should not eat eggs. Drinking low calorie drinks is either good for you because they act to prevent tooth decay or bad because they are replete with carcinogens.

The sun helps your body obtain vitamin D, but it is bad for you since exposure causes melanoma. How in the world can one person sort out the truth from the fantasy or completely bogus or over-reactive science? We need to do so if we want to minimize the risk of any potential harm and live a happy and healthy life.

A plethora of information, all claiming to be both accurate and the latest on subjects running the gamut from weight loss to sundry medical issues are available courtesy of television programs, newspapers, books and magazines. Much of this has been proven to be not only poorly informed but also downright dangerous. Moreover, such articles never take into consideration such individualistic characteristics as medical history, present state of health and fitness or even think about lifestyle. It stands to reason that what is beneficial for one person may not be for another. When you are dealing with your health, you do not need a one-solution-fits-all but a tailored response.

The current state of everyone?s physical well-being as well as alarming statistics on health issues and heightened awareness through the media, have resulted in more and more people stopping to consider their fitness levels and lifestyle. This has produced an increase in the demand for coaches in health. This provides people not only with the chance to access advice specific to their needs but also to have someone to back them up, motivate and provide support ? an online health coach. This makes it easier to prepare and go through the necessary lifestyle adjustments to be successful. Whether you want to stop smoking, lose weight through adopting healthier eating habits, find the right way to deal with stress or even to discover the best type of fitness program for you, online health Coaching proves helpful for both short and long-term goals.

If you want to work with an expert online health coach you need to have or acquire certain skills. You also need safe and confidential access to such things as Skype or e-mail. A typical online health coach has a background in health services, nutrition or fitness. They frequently have received training in various areas of specialty including health counseling. Compassion and understanding make some of the health coaches, such as those on http://www.FreelanceCoach.com among the best available. These are experienced professionals who truly want to help.

China joins 9-nation club with first aircraft carrier

AP

China's first aircraft carrier is decorated with colored flags at a shipyard in Dalian in northeast China's Liaoning province Monday.

By Ed Flanagan, NBC News

China brought its first aircraft carrier into service Tuesday, raising the country?s military capability amid heightened tensions with its regional neighbors.

Christened Liaoning -- after the port where the carrier was significantly overhauled after being bought from Ukraine -- this new addition to China?s navy is not large compared to America?s super carriers, but could still potentially have an impact on territorial disputes in the region.

?The aircraft carrier will play an important role in China's settlement of islands disputes and defense of its maritime rights and interests,? said Chinese naval expert, Li Jie, in an interview with Chinese newspaper, People?s Daily.???

The rest of China?s state media also played up the significance of the Liaoning, with the China News Service writing that the Liaoning would have ?far-reaching influence on protecting China?s territory, safety and development and to make the world more peaceful.?

Taiwanese ships clash with Japanese coast guard over disputed islands

The commissioning of the ship is a huge display of national prestige, elevating China to the nine-nation club of carrier-equipped navies.

Presided over by President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao, the unveiling of the Liaoning also comes just before a once-a-decade leadership change in China, during which a new generation of top leaders will be introduced.

China's Ministry of Defense welcomed the new ship, declaring that it would "raise the overall operational strength of the Chinese navy" and help Beijing to "effectively protect national sovereignty, security and development interests."

Japanese coast guard ships shoot water cannon at Taiwanese fishing boats in the East China Sea in a territorial dispute. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

The ship?s full capabilities remain unknown at this point, but the size of the Liaoning and China?s relative lack of technical experience with carrier operations suggests that it will serve more as a training vessel then a deployable ship for combat operations.

The carrier can reportedly hold a compliment of 30 fixed-wing fighters compared to the much larger American Nimitz class carriers than can carry around 90 aircraft.

China?s normally nationalistic newspaper, Global Times, warned yesterday that the Liaoning ?does not have the capacity to handle its tasks as it needs more adaptation to enhance its fighting capacity.?

Japan infuriates China by buying disputed isles

Still, the Global Times and other Chinese media were quick to link the launching of the Liaoning with the ongoing tensions around the region.?

Japan has been locked in a bitter spat with China over ownership of islands claimed by both countries.

The Japanese central government?s move this month to purchase the East China Sea islands, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, from their private owner led to heated nationwide protests in China that forced many Japanese companies like Panasonic, Toyota and Canon to suspend operations.?

Much at stake for US as tensions rise in troubled China Seas

While the protests have subsided, tensions have remained heightened. Just this week, China?s Vice Foreign Minister, Z|hang Zhijun told his Japanese counterpart, "China will never tolerate any bilateral actions by Japan that harm Chinese territorial sovereignty? Japan must banish illusions, undertake searching reflection and use concrete actions to amend its errors, returning to the consensus and understandings reached between our two countries' leaders."

Chinese protesters: 'The Diaoyu islands belong to China!'

Japanese embassy officials in London did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the Liaoning and ongoing territorial issues.

Tokyo has known for years about China?s aircraft carrier ambitions, but now must deal with the blowback of this announcement with an increasingly concerned and nationalist home audience.

With Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda poised to call for new elections later this year, he can ill afford to look weak on Chinese intransigence in the East China Sea.

Emotional anniversary reignites anti-Japan protests in China

The odds of war breaking out between the two largest Asian economies remain remote, but there have been clashes in the waters around the Diaoyu islands, with Chinese and now Taiwanese fishing ships entering the island chain?s territorial waters, a move the Japanese view as an intrusion on their territory.?

Though the Liaoning was formally named Tuesday, the carrier has actually been decades in the making.?The ship was built at a Ukrainian shipyard in 1988 and dubbed the Varyag.?It was purchased a decade later by China and retrofitted.

Romney pulls his punches at Bill Clinton event

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Introduced by Bill Clinton and facing a room filled with Democrats, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney pulled his punches on Tuesday and outlined an approach to foreign aid that would boost the role of free enterprise in developing nations.

Romney addressed the former president's Clinton Global Initiative and from the outset made light of his situation.

Clinton's speech at the Democratic National Convention last month gave a boost to President Barack Obama, who now leads Romney in a number of swing states that will be vital in the November 6 election.

After Clinton gave a polite introduction of Romney, thanking him for his support for the Americorps foreign aid program begun during the Clinton presidency, Romney quipped:

"If there's one thing we've learned this election season, it's that a few words from Bill Clinton can do a man a lot of good. After that introduction, I guess all I have to do is wait a day or two for the bounce," he said.

Laughter rang through the audience, which included a number of high-profile Democrats like former Clinton Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, former Clinton White House Chief of Staff John Podesta, former Ohio Senator John Glenn, retired General Wesley Clark and entertainer Will.i.Am, among others.

The Clinton Global Initiative is a bipartisan aid effort and Romney held back from his usual campaign barbs against Obama.

But with the world's attention on the annual United Nations General Assembly where Obama spoke in another part of Manhattan, Romney cited a number of foreign policy challenges that implied criticism of Obama's handling of them.

"Syria has witnessed the killing of tens of thousands of people. The president of Egypt is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. Our ambassador to Libya was assassinated in a terrorist attack. And Iran is moving toward nuclear weapons capability. We feel that we are at the mercy of events, rather than shaping events," he said.

Romney had drawn criticism from Democrats and some Republicans two weeks ago by injecting politics into the tragic events surrounding the killing of U.S. ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other diplomatic personnel in Libya.

That was only one of several stumbles to afflict the former Massachusetts governor since his own Republican convention, and he is now attempting to return his campaign to solid ground with six weeks left of campaigning.

After his visit to New York, he will go on a two-day bus tour of Ohio, widely considered to be a state he must win. A Washington Post poll had Obama up eight points in Ohio, 52 percent to 44 percent.

He will be joined at a rally in Dayton by his vice presidential running mate, Paul Ryan, to try to recreate the energy for his campaign that the pair generated when he picked the conservative Wisconsin congressman to join the ticket last month.

Romney's central theme in New York was to propose that the United States put a greater focus on using U.S. foreign assistance to encourage free enterprise as a way of creating jobs in the developing world.

Romney argued that much of U.S. development aid has had limited success at lifting people out of poverty and that U.S. foreign aid programs frequently have tried to supplant private enterprise.

"A temporary aid package can jolt an economy. It can fund some projects. It can pay some bills. It can employ some people some of the time. But it can't sustain an economy ? not for long," he said.

Romney, a former private equity executive, proposed a "prosperity pact" program that would use financial assistance to support development of free enterprise.

The United States has backed "micro-credit programs" for years to fund small loans to help entrepreneurs in developing nations create businesses. Bill Clinton was a prime advocate for these policies.

Romney would take that a step further to provide assistance to help medium-sized businesses develop and connect them to the global market.

"A year from now, I hope to return to this meeting as president, having made substantial progress toward achieving the reforms I've outlined," Romney said.

Business Evolves, Does Your Sales Process?

Sure, there are some tried and true ways to handle sales and customer service that don?t really ever go out of style. However, if a salesperson also continually evolves and improves, they?re likely to stay ahead of the industry curve.

Here are some areas you may want to look at to upgrade your sales process:

Your ?Rolodex?

Are you using a paper system to track client names and numbers?

This may have worked in the past, and it never hurts to have an index of business cards, but you know you can?t always take your paper list of contacts with you. Consider upgrading to a digital CRM format that lets you access information from anywhere.

Not only might a cloud-based contact database provide easy anywhere access to contacts, but it also allows you to add information on the fly that can help you manage your accounts better. You can also share these contact details with management and colleagues for collaboration purposes.

Your Day Planner

The old paper calendar might have worked well for decades in the world of sales but nowadays there are way better ways to manage your time. A digital calendar will help you set alerts so that nothing gets forgotten, it?ll help you book meetings with clients and colleagues, it?ll help you collaborate internally within your company, and more.

Loss of your paper calendar could be catastrophic but the new electronic versions can be backed up so that they can be accessed and updated from anywhere.

Your Sales Spreadsheet

If you?re using a sales spreadsheet to track what?s happening in your sales funnel , this is another outdated approach. What if you lose it? And is it displayed in an actionable way that helps you prioritize your workload and see, really easily, what your numbers are against your actual plan? A CRM tool is a much better approach that can help you not only track information but easily action what is most pressing. Consider reading this article Stop using Excel templates for tracking your sales pipeline? for more info on how a more automated solution could help you.

For example, if you implement a digital sales forecasting and pipeline tool and track your results you can see how effective your processes are at each phase of the sales process.

Using Business Intelligence Tools

Old sales tools didn?t exactly make it easy in terms of account management and business development with accounts.? It wasn?t easy to track old results against plans. Today?s BI tools can help you generate helpful business reports that make it clear to you how you?re really doing and how you might be able to boost results with customers.

There are many other ways to ensure your sales process is continually evolving. It is important to continually update your sales script.? Some companies use the very same? script for each customer instead of tailoring sales and marketing plans depending on the audience.

Reviewing your efforts regularly in terms of how you?re managing existing accounts and how you go after new business can help you make sure that you are going to continue to excel in the world of sales.

Do You Really Want to Subscribe to Microsoft Office? Yes, You Might

For the first time this fall, consumers will have the choice between subscribing to Microsoft Office as a service - Office 365 - or buying a traditional license for the productivity software. The decision isn't simple: you'll pay less upfront for a subscription, but you may be allowing Microsoft's hand in your pocket for the rest of your days. for the rest of your days.

Consumers who want to upgrade their Microsoft Office software this fall have to ask themselves a hard question: "Do I want to subscribe to Office like I would a magazine - or continue to buy it like a book?"

If you want to subscribe, Microsoft is more than willing to help you out. For the first time, consumers will be able to buy an Office 365 subscription, paying for either a home or small business edition of Office for a one-time annual fee that covers five PCs or Macs. And you could end up paying just $1.66 per device per month for a continually updated piece of software.

If at any point down the road you decide not to pay anymore, however, Office goes away. And for the customer who?s not all that convinced that Microsoft offers compelling reasons to upgrade from generation to generation of Office, that might be the best bet. Instead, you can buy the traditional ?packaged? copy of Office, trading a higher up-front price for a perpetual license.

And, this time around, there?s a third aoption: if you buy a Windows RT tablet, Microsoft will throw in the core Office apps - Word, PowerPoint, Excel and the oft-overlooked OneNote - for free.

It?s a decision that consumers should start thinking about, with the launch of Windows 8 due in a month?s time. Microsoft hasn?t said when the final version Office will be available, but users can download the preview version from Microsoft?s website.

The Pricing Puzzle

Microsoft is offering three versions of the traditional Office suite: Home & Student ($139.99), Home & Business ($219.99), and Professional ($399.99). Each version can be licensed by either one Mac or PC, forever, except for the Professional version. That?s PC-only.

On Office 365, Microsoft is offering two versions: Home Premium ($99.99 per household per year) and Small Business Premium ($149.99 per user per year). Note the italicized terms, as they?re significant. Each household that buys Office 365 Home Premium can install it on some combination of 5 Macs and PCs - that?s where the $1.66 per month per device figure is taken from. ?Small businesses pay by user - that's just under $300 per year for two, and on up from there.

The average consumer, then, will probably choose between either Office Home & Student, Office Home & Business and the Office 365 Home Premium subscription.?

To Wes Miller, who covers Office for Directions on Microsoft, consumers will have to ask themselves three questions:?

  1. How often do you upgrade your version of Office??
  2. How many machines will you buy it on??
  3. And will you buy a Windows RT machine?

For enterprises, these aren?t trivial questions; Directions holds a two-day ?boot camp? on Microsoft?s Software Assurance, which provides many of the same benefits as Office 365, including automatic, free version upgrades and multiple languages.

For a single user with a single PC, the answer is pretty simple: unless you want that quick-and-easy upgrade path that Office 365 offers, choosing between Office Home & Student and Home & Business is the only decision necessary. Basically, the difference is Outlook: Home & Business has it, Home & Student doesn?t. If Outlook is worth an additional $80, you?re done.

Adding more devices to the mix, plus Office 365, complicates things. On the other end of the spectrum, a household with five Macs and PCs (and that needs Office on all of them) will pay about a total of $700 for Office Home & Student installed on all five devices. That?s $200 more than a five-year Office 365 Home Premium license, which covers those five PCs. Here, Office 365 is probably the way to go, from a financial sense.

If you?re somewhat in the middle - with three devices, say - features may help sway your decision. Three office Home & Student licenses will cost about $420, a little more than a four-year Office Premium license. Three Office Home & Business installations will cost you $660.?

And why is that $660 figure important? Because Office 365 gives you Outlook and Publisher and Access for free. Microsoft is so eager to push you toward subscriptions that it is pricing them more cheaply than the Home and Business version, and tossing in the two extra applications on top of that. Again, that?s Microsoft pushing you toward the subscription model.?

Office 365 also offers a number of conveniences, including ?Office on Demand,? or the ability to stream a virtual version of Office to a PC you?re borrowing or don?t actually own. And documents are automatically saved to Microsoft?s cloud storage, SkyDrive, which you can also access on virtually any Internet-connected device, including mobile phones. For that matter, Office 365 will eventually land on mobile devices as well, although Microsoft hasn?t said when.

What Subscriptions Mean for Microsoft?

Why is Microsoft pushing subscriptions? Wall Street.

?We?re seeing all signs pointing toward Microsoft?s subscriptions not only trying to look but be more appealing outright to consumers than buying an outright software package,? Directions on Microsoft?s Miller said.?

Instead of the spike-then-decline, spike-then-decline buying patterns that accompany new product launches, a recurring revenue model offers Microsoft a more consistent revenue stream. More importantly, it also gently reinforces the notion of paying for Office as a service, Miller said, rather than as a product, ingraining the habit among consumers.

?It makes for nice, flat-to-gaining revenue year over year, recurring, and it makes the business run more efficiently,? Miller said. ?It?s definitely in Microsoft?s best interest.?

That's different of course, from the question of whether it's in your best interest.

For Microsoft though, its critical to find out how many people will sign on to the new Office 365 model, and how many will still want the comfort of a perpetual license to avoid having to keep shelling out for Office - albeit with the latest upgrades - for the rest of their lives. A user who may have been turned off by the new ?ribbon? design, for example, may prefer to hold on to his older copy of Office and just use that. According to Miller, Office 2013 is one of the more compelling upgrades, with integrated SkyDrive backups as one of the killer features of the software.

In fact, look to the number of Office 365 subscriptions being one of the questions that will interest Wall Street most in the quarters following the product's launch. For along with magazine subscriptions, cell phone contracts, antimalware licenses and hosted storage, more and more companies are trying to convince you to pay them regularly, and forever for all kinds of software. Microsoft just wants in on the gravy train.

Behind Enemy Lines: Memphis football

Before every football game this year, The Blue Zone is going to sit down with a football writer from the opposing school?s student newspaper to get the scoop on their team and season.

This week, The Chronicle?s Daniel Carp spoke to The Daily Helmsman?s Sports Editor Bryan Heater about this weekend?s contest between Duke and Memphis.

READ: Check out our Duke-Memphis football event page with a game preview, interviews, our weekly video, the weekly injury report and more

The Chronicle: Most Duke fans haven?t seen much of Memphis this year. What has been the overarching theme to the Tigers' season?

Bryan Heater: We?re really trying to rebuild the program right now. There?s 124 teams in the FBS, we?re probably down there around 118 or 119. Offensively Memphis runs a spread offense, but it?s pretty different from most spread offenses you?ll see. The quarterback isn?t taking snaps out of the shotgun all the time and there?s a big emphasis on running as well.

TC: Memphis had some quarterback woes during the offseason. After losing their top two quarterbacks to transfers, who have the Tigers turned to as their next signal caller?

BH: We have a really young team. Jacob Karam, who is our starting quarterback, will be making his fourth career start this weekend. Coming into the season he had only thrown 18 passes for his career. Our backup, Will Gilchrist, is a converted wide receiver who has never thrown a pass in a college game. That left us coming into the season being very inexperienced at the quarterback position.

TC: Searching for its first win of the season, what will be the keys to Memphis' gameplan this Saturday against Duke?

BH: Their gameplan for this week is going to be to not get away from the run like we did last week. That also comes with not falling behind quickly. We finally had some success throwing last weekend against Middle Tennessee State but because we fell behind and fumbled the ball six times last weekend we ended up having to pass and get away from the run. That?s definitely going to be a big focus.

TC: In his weekly press conference, Duke head coach David Cutcliffe talked about the Tigers' strengths on special teams. How big of a role will the kicking game play in this weekend?s contest?

BH: Right now special teams has been our forte. Our punter, Tom Hornsey, is honestly one of our biggest assets. He?s had a number of punts downed inside the 10-yard line, so he?s very good at placing the ball down there. Paulo Henriques has been our placekicker and a large percentage of his kicks are touchbacks. So that definitely helps Memphis not have to worry about kickoffs getting returned for touchdowns. Special teams is actually what has kept us in a lot of these games.

TC: Finally, what is your prediction for the game?

BH: Duke 34, Memphis 17

US says Libya attack was terrorism: Was it unprepared for Arab Spring fallout?

Now that the White House says a 'terrorist attack' struck the US Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, questions could arise about President Obama's Middle East policy in the wake of the Arab Spring.

By Howard LaFranchi,?Staff writer / September 21, 2012

After a week of hesitation, the White House now says it is ?self-evident? that a ?terrorist attack,? and not just a spontaneous reaction from a furious mob, struck the US Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, last week.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The characterization is important, because it opens the door to the conclusion that the attack was a preplanned assault, resulting in the deaths of four US diplomats, including the US ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens.

The repercussions of declaring that the Benghazi attack was a planned terrorist assault on the United States would be extensive. For starters, it would raise questions about the Obama administration?s precautions in a volatile region and its preparedness for anti-US strikes in an area known to harbor Al Qaeda and other Islamist extremist elements.

More broadly, it could call into question President Obama?s Middle East policy in the wake of the Arab awakening. Some Republican critics are already tarring the policy as too weak and dismissive of the threats that the region?s tumult presents.

Far from clarifying the situation, the White House characterization of the Benghazi attack as self-evidently a terrorist attack only muddies the waters further, some foreign-policy experts say.

?I heard that phrase, and I thought, what do they mean? Are they using ?self-evident? as kind of a throwaway phrase to say, ?Well, this was a situation where violence was used with intent against a US facility?? Or are they saying, ?We?ve got evidence that this was a preplanned event??? says Wayne White, a former State Department official with experience in intelligence gathering in the Middle East. ?It?s just not clear what this statement really says.?

On Thursday, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters, ?It is self-evident that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack,? adding, ?Our embassy was attacked violently, and the result was four deaths of American officials.?

Later at a question-and-answer session in Miami organized by the Spanish-language TV network Univision, Mr. Obama emphasized that while many details are still unclear, it appeared that extremists had used protests resulting from outrage over an anti-Muslim video as an ?excuse? to attack US interests.

The Arabic and Islamic sstronomy

Studying the universeDuring the period when the Western civilization was experiencing the Middle Ages, between 700 and 1200 A.D., an Islamic empire was stretching from Central Asia to southern Europe. In this area, people were appreciating very much the education and they greatly contributed to the science and mathematics domains. Many classical Greek and Roman works were translated into Arabic and scientists expanded those ideas.

For example, the geocentric model of Ptolemy formed the basis of the Arab and Islamic astronomy, but several Islamic astronomers have made certain observations and calculations which were much more accurate than the ones of Ptolemy. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the Islamic astronomy is the fact that it was built on the sciences of two great cultures (Greek and Indian). Blending and expanding these different ideas led to a new science which later influenced the Western scientific exploration, starting with the Renaissance.

Perhaps the most vital reason for which the Muslims studied the sky in so much detail was for the purpose of time-measuring. The Islamic religion asks the believers to pray five times a day, when the Sun is situated in specific positions. Measuring the time with the help of astronomy was the most accurate way to determine the moments when the Muslims had to pray; it was also used to establish the date of the religious festivals.

The Muslim holy book, the Koran, makes frequent reference to the astronomical patterns that are visible in the sky and is a major source of the traditions associated with the Islamic astronomy. Another important use of the astronomy for religious purpose was for the determination of latitude and longitude. Using the stars as guides, especially the Polar Star, several tables were compiled, which calculated the latitude and longitude of important cities in the Islamic world. Using this information, the Muslims could be assured that they were praying in the direction of Mecca, as it is specified in the Koran.

Arabic astronomy

Besides its use for religious purposes, astronomy was also used as a tool for navigation. The astrolabe (an instrument which calculated the positions of certain stars in order to determine the direction) was invented by the Greeks and adopted and perfected by the Arabs. The sextant was developed by the Arabs, this being a more sophisticated version of the astrolabe. This instrument ultimately became the cornerstone in the navigation domain for the European explorers.

In the Islamic world, science was considered the highest purpose and it was strongly supported by the nobility. Most scientists were working in the courts of regional leaders and were financially rewarded for their achievements. In 830, the Khalifah Al-Mamuun founded Bayt-al-Hikman (the House of Wisdom), as a gathering place where the researchers could translate texts from Greek and Persian into Arabic. These texts have formed the basis of the Islamic scientific knowledge.

One of the greatest Islamic astronomers was Al-Khwarizmi, who lived in the 9th century and was the inventor of algebra. He developed this mathematical device completely in words and not in mathematical expressions, but he based the system on the Indian numbers borrowed by the Arabs (what we today call them Arabic numerals). After several hundreds of years, his work was translated into Latin and served as the introduction of the Indian number system in Europe, together with zero. Al-Khwarizmi performed detailed calculations of the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets, and also did calculations of the eclipses. He constructed a table of the latitudes and longitudes of 2402 cities and landmarks, forming the basis of an early world map.

Another Islamic astronomer who had an impact on the Western science was Al-Farghani. In the late 9th century, he wrote very much about the motion of the celestial bodies. Like many other Islamic astronomers, Al-Farghani accepted the geocentric model of Ptolemy, not only in the Islamic world but also throughout the entire Europe. In the 12th century, his works were translated into Latin, and it is said that Dante got his astronomical knowledge from the books of Al-Farghani.

In the late 10th century, the astronomer Al-Khujandi has built a huge observatoryAstronomy near Tehran, in Iran. He built a large sextant inside the observatory and was the first astronomer who was capable of measuring with an accuracy of arc seconds. He observed a series of transits types of the Sun, which allowed him to calculate the tilt of Earth?s axis in relation to the Sun. As we know today, Earth?s tilt is approximately 23?34?, and al-Khujandi measured it as being 23?32?19?. Using this information, Al-Khujandi also compiled a list of latitudes and longitudes of the major cities.

Omar Khayyam was a great Persian scientist, philosopher and poet who lived between 1048 and 1131. He compiled several astronomical tables and performed a reformation of the calendar, which was much more accurate than the Julian calendar and close to the Gregorian one. An amazing thing was his calculation regarding the length of the year (365.24219858156), which is accurate to the 6th decimal! Western science owes very much to the Islamic and Arab scientists, whose contributions range from the Arabic names of the stars that we still use today, to the mathematical and astronomical treaties used by Europeans to enter the modern world of science.

Georgia indoor gun range given liquor license; opening lounge for customers

Do drinking and guns go well together? A Georgia shooting range will soon find out (Original images CBC/Reuter??A Georgia couple is building a $3.5 million indoor shooting range that will feature a full bar, serving alcohol to its patrons.

So, is this the start of a potentially dangerous new business model where intoxicated firearm enthusiasts will literally be shooting from the hip? Well, not exactly.

WSBTV reports that Lakeside Guns Shop owner Kristina Brown plans to open the multi-million dollar indoor range with her husband in Powder Springs. And when it comes to being state of the art, the "Governor's Club" will not only have the best technology available to marksmen, it will also have Makers Mark.

That's because by a vote of 4-1, the Powder Springs City Council voted to approval an alcohol permit for the establishment.

However, some residents are skeptical, especially with a housing subdivision being built just 100 yards from the new range.

"I mean, that's just stupid," Traci Hart, mother of three, told the station. "We don't need drunk people running around in and out of the neighborhood."

Georgia law does not generally require conceal and carry permits. In most cases, if a resident in legally able to own a firearm, they are allowed to carry it in their home, vehicle and place of business. There are some notable exceptions, including government buildings. In the cases of bars and restaurants, gun owners are allowed to conceal and carry firearms if the owner of the establishment permits it.

So, is Hart right to worry about patrons ordering a double then firing off their double barrel shotgun? Not so fast.

There's a bit of relief for those opposed to the idea and a potential let down for anyone planning to put a new spin on the shot glass.

Brown sent WSBTV a statement, clarifying that once someone has ordered a drink in the lounge, they will not be permitted to enter the firing range:

"Customers will have to order a drink with their identification card and once the card is accepted, and flagged, they cannot be checked back into the range that day," the statement reads.

Still, the Browns are not na?ve about their unique sales pitch. The rest of the statement goes on to add, "Georgia Law allows persons with gun permits to bring their weapon into a restaurant that serves alcohol, we are taking it even a step further."

Apes enjoy slapstick humor, too

Non-human primates may enjoy watching someone else trip on a banana peel, according to new research on laughter, which found that apes might appreciate slapstick humor.

The research also helps to explain the origins of laughter and the social aspects of the behavior.

Robin Dunbar, who co-authored one such study with Guillaume Dezecache, described what non-human primates might be amused by.

"The use of language-based jokes is clearly unique to humans," Dunbar, a professor of evolutionary psychology at the University of Oxford, told Discovery News. "There is some suggestion that apes 'play practical jokes' or laugh at another's misfortune, such as the banana skin situation, but these are only casual observations."

NEWS: Ape 'Genius' Smarter Than the Average Chimp

"Human laughter derives from the play invitation vocalizations of Old World monkeys and apes, but this is normally confined to juveniles and adolescents; adults don't play," he continued.

"In apes, this is identifiably rather closer to human laughter," Dunbar explained, "and bonobos in particular use laughter a lot in play contexts, even among adults. What seems to have happened is that humans have taken these monkey/ape play vocalizations and tweaked them and increased the frequency of their use."

Human laughter still has an animalistic quality, in the sense that it involves a series of rapid exhalation-inhalation cycles comparable to other primate sounds; it's louder than human speech; and, like sneezing, laughter is contagious.

Although a room full of people can laugh at one comic's joke, Dunbar and Dezecache suspected that the size of bonded natural laughter groups might be limited and similar to social grooming. The latter facilitates bonding and makes individuals feel good, promoting connections between others. Laughter can function in a similar way.

WATCH VIDEO: Apes Giggle Like Humans

For the study, accepted for publication in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior, the researchers studied multiple social groups in bars throughout the United Kingdom, France and Germany. They took note of conversational subgroup size and laughter subgroup size, meaning the number of individuals laughing in an obviously coordinated way.

The scientists found that laughter groups were limited to three to four individuals.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Science can be improbably practical

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: As the impresario behind the Ig Nobel Prizes, Marc Abrahams is skilled at sniffing out what seems to be silly science ? but often, there's a practical point behind the seeming silliness.

    2. Doubts arise over claims for 'Jesus' Wife' papyrus
    3. Atlas may solve mysteries of human brain
    4. Beeswax filling may be oldest dental work

"We think laughter long predates the appearance of language in human evolution, and was co-opted from play as a mechanism to allow bonding between larger numbers of individuals," Dunbar explained. "Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, which are the neurochemicals used in bonding in monkeys and apes. Laughter allows us to increase the size of the bonding group because several people can laugh together; whereas grooming is, even in humans, a one-to-one activity, with only the recipient gaining the benefit of the endorphins."

In intimate social gatherings, people tend to laugh in sync. This doesn't happen as precisely in larger venues or even when people in different houses are responding to the same jokes on a humorous television program.

Natural laughter group size probably hasn't increased tremendously because these more modern forms of entertainment would not have had time to affect human evolution much.

NEWS: Fossil Links Apes, Monkeys

"What happens in comedy clubs is that we think we are in a small virtual group with the comedian and the people immediately with us," Dunbar noted, "which might explain why not everyone laughs at the same time in a club or theater."

Marina Davila-Ross, a senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Portsmouth, has studied laughter and smiles in apes and humans, and how such communication evolved.

"It is surprising that our group size limit for sharing laughter is generally three, especially when one considers its contagious quality," she told Discovery News.

"Nonetheless, this sharing is likely to help people to bond, notably more so than apes, who share laughter with only one other individual," she added. "Interestingly, laughter has more of a social role in great ape species that live in larger social communities, a pattern that coincides with the findings on human laughter by Dezecache and Dunbar."
