DiCaprio, Maguire, others urge voter expression

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire lead a cast of stars in a new public service announcement urging young voters to use social media to express the issues most important to them in the upcoming election.

Zac Efron, Selena Gomez, Ellen DeGeneres, Jonah Hill and Joseph Gordon Levitt also appear in the Vote 4 Stuff video unveiled Monday, joining other stars in a call to voters to post tweets, photos and short videos about concerns they feel deserve presidential attention.

"This is one of the most important elections of our lifetime," said DiCaprio, whose production company, Appian Way, is a producer of Vote 4 Stuff. "We are using the power of social media throughout the Vote 4 Stuff campaign to incite bipartisan conversation around real issues, encourage registration and voting in November."

Edward Norton, Sarah Silverman, Benicio Del Toro and Amanda Seyfried are also featured in the 2 ?-minute video, which promises that content created in response to it will be incorporated into Vote 4 Stuff's future online efforts.

Among the concerns these stars reveal in the video: Jobs, marriage equality, climate change, foreign policy, reproductive rights, immigration, worker's rights, teacher salaries and education.

MLB Playoffs: Division, Wild Card Postseason Scenarios With Two Days Left In 2012 Regular Season

All five American League playoff teams have been decided. New York, Baltimore, Detroit, Texas and Oakland are in. The Tigers have won the AL Central, but the other two division titles are still up for grabs.

Four of the five National League playoff spots have been claimed, and all three division races are over. Washington (NL East champion), Cincinnati (NL Central champion), San Francisco (NL West champion) and Atlanta (wild card) are in. St. Louis is one win or a Dodgers loss from earning the other wild card.

AL EAST

The New York Yankees, who beat Boston 10-2 on Monday night, took a one-game lead over the Orioles, who lost 5-3 at Tampa Bay. If the Yankees and Orioles tie for the division title, they would play a tiebreaker Thursday in Baltimore. The loser would play in the wild-card game Friday, needing a win to advance. The Rays were eliminated from playoff contention when Oakland beat Texas 4-3.

AL CENTRAL

Detroit beat Kansas City 6-3 to win the division crown for the second straight season. The Tigers will open the postseason at home Saturday. The White Sox, despite an 11-0 victory over Cleveland, were eliminated from playoff contention when the Tigers won.

AL WEST

Texas has a one-game lead over the Athletics with two games remaining in their head-to-head series at Oakland. The Rangers need one victory to win their third consecutive division title, while the A's must pull off a sweep to snatch away the crown. Oakland won the series opener 4-3 Monday night, clinching at least a wild-card berth while eliminating the Angels and Rays from playoff contention.

NL EAST

Washington, despite a 2-0 loss to Philadelphia, clinched the division title ? its first since moving from Montreal in 2005 ? thanks to Atlanta's 2-1 loss at Pittsburgh. The Braves have already wrapped up a playoff berth and will host the NL wild-card game Friday.

NL CENTRAL

St. Louis, the defending World Series champion, beat Cincinnati 4-2 to clinch at least a tie for the second wild card. One loss by the Dodgers to San Francisco or another Cardinals win would lock up a playoff berth for St. Louis.

Division champion Cincinnati is tied with Washington for the best record in the National League. The Reds must finish with a better mark than the Nationals to earn home-field advantage throughout the postseason because Washington won the season series.

NL WEST

San Francisco has already clinched the division title and will open the playoffs at home Saturday against Cincinnati or Washington. Los Angeles beat the Giants 3-2 Monday night to stay alive in the wild-card race. The Dodgers are two games behind St. Louis with two to play.

Chaos theory and a little physics predict the outcome at the roulette table

ScienceDaily (Oct. 1, 2012) ? At first glance, a roulette table looks like a jumble of numbers and a randomly hopping little white ball. But with a better understanding of physics and some general knowledge of the starting conditions, it may be possible to shift the odds of winning a little in your favor. According to new research published in the American Institute of Physics' journal Chaos, by knowing some of the starting conditions -- such as the speed of the spin and the rotation of the ball -- this game of chance starts to look a little less random.

Under normal conditions, according to the researchers, the anticipated return on a random roulette bet is -2.7 percent. By applying their calculations to a casino-grade roulette wheel and using a simple clicker device, the researchers were able to achieve an average return of 18 percent, well above what would be expected from a random bet.

With more complete information, such as monitoring by an overhead camera, the researchers were able to improve their accuracy even further. This highly intrusive scheme, however, could not be deployed under normal gambling conditions. The researchers also observed that even a slight tilt in the wheel would produce a very pronounced bias, which could be exploited to substantially improve the accuracy of their predictions.

This model, however, does not take into account the minor changes of the friction of the surfaces, the level of the wheel, or the manner in which the croupier plays the ball -- any of which would thwart the advantage of the physicist/gambler. The gambler, the researchers conclude, can rest assured that the game is on some level predictable, and therefore inherently honest.

Nokia and du introduce Asha 311 with free Facebook

Nokia yesterday announced the availability of budget smartphone, the Asha 311 and has teamed up with du to deliver a packaged Pay As You Go SIM card, along with six months free Facebook access.

The package also includes credit worth AED 25, of which AED 15 can be used for international calls, and AED 10 can be applied to any type of usage.

"Without a doubt, Facebook has become an important medium for consumers to communicate with one another," said Vithesh Reddy, general manager, Nokia Lower Gulf.

"Providing six months of free Facebook is in line with our global strategy of connecting the next billion consumers to the Internet. The Asha 311 incorporates a 3.5G capacitive touch screen device, powered by a 1 GHz processor. Nokia claims websites load up to three times faster in comparison with devices without cloud-accelerated browsing.

Nokia also announced some 10,000 apps will be available for download. All users will receive an exclusive gift of 40 EA games to download for free including titles such as ?Tetris', ?Bejeweled', ?Need for Speed: The Run' and ?FIFA 2012'.

The Asha 311 also features a 3.2MP camera and pre-installed Nokia Maps, in addition to the 15-level pre-bundled version of ?Angry Birds'.
