Crosby's return a hit on Broadway as Pens top NYR

NEW YORK (AP) ? Sidney Crosby was on the ice for three of Pittsburgh's five goals, and defenseman Kris Letang was out there for all of them.

The Penguins are suddenly the picture of health, and the NHL's hottest team is making the Eastern Conference playoff race a fight to the finish.

Crosby returned from a 40-game absence caused by concussion symptoms, and Letang rejoined the lineup after missing the past five because of the same ailment. That gave the Penguins their most complete lineup in months, and Pittsburgh responded with a thorough 5-2 victory over the East-leading New York Rangers on Thursday night.

The Penguins have won 10 straight, including two wins over the Rangers in that spurt, and now trail New York by four points. Pittsburgh has 13 games left, compared to 12 for the Rangers.

Crosby was hoping he wouldn't mess up any chemistry created by his teammates while he was out.

"I didn't want to be that guy," the 24-year-old center said. "I obviously knew we were playing really well. There was a little bit of adjustment, playing wing, things like that. I thought everyone played great, and I'm happy we got the win."

Crosby played for the first time since he was forced to the sidelines on Dec. 5. He got on the score sheet with an assist, but his presence provided so much more that can't be analyzed by numbers.

"I think he played a great game," said Matt Cooke, who scored two goals while playing on a new third line with Crosby. "He draws so much attention when he is on the ice. People are worried about how good he is. That makes the players on the ice with him that much better."

That showed throughout as the Penguins became the first team this season to score five goals against the Rangers.

Crosby joined Cooke and Tyler Kennedy on a line. Kennedy had two assists and NHL points leader Evgeni Malkin added a goal for the Penguins, who haven't lost since Feb. 19 at Buffalo. Pittsburgh's winning streak started two days later with a 2-0 home victory against the Rangers.

"That was the only way we could catch them, by beating them because they were winning a lot," said Marc-Andre Fleury, who was overshadowed despite making 29 saves in his 38th win of the season, and ninth in the streak. "They are tough to reach. Tonight was a big game for us."

Crosby assisted on Chris Kunitz's goal that made it 4-2 at 3:01 of the third period, shortly after the Rangers had killed a 4-minute, high-sticking penalty on Stu Bickel. Crosby swung behind the New York net and found Kunitz in the left circle for a shot that beat Martin Biron.

Pascal Dupuis pushed the Penguins' lead to 5-2 at 7:35. Crosby didn't figure in the scoring on that one, as Dupuis put in a rebound of defenseman Paul Martin's shot, but he was on the ice for it. Cooke gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead 2:54 in, and Malkin and Cooke connected 1:22 apart in the second period to stretch the advantage to 3-1.

Carl Hagelin got the Rangers even at 1 in the first period, and Marian Gaborik brought New York within 3-2 late in the second with his 35th goal. Brad Richards had two assists, and Gaborik and Hagelin both had one for the potent line that has scored the team's last seven goals over three games.

"We need to get some other guys going in behind it," Rangers coach John Tortorella said. "A few guys are struggling. I'm really excited at what Richie's line is doing, but we have to come back in there with something that can handle defensive stuff, and another line that can score a goal or two."

Biron stopped 27 shots, but the Rangers lost for the fourth time in six games.

As the Penguins are getting healthy, the Rangers are still missing key cogs from their lineup. Biron was forced to start his second straight game in place of Henrik Lundqvist, New York's No. 1 goalie who is still feeling the effects of the flu. The Rangers were also without forward Ryan Callahan (bruised foot), who sat out for the sixth time in nine games, and defenseman Michael Del Zotto (hip), who has missed five of eight.

"We get them one more time," Richards said of the Rangers' last meeting with Pittsburgh on April 5. "We're still in first place and we're still a good team. We have guys coming back soon and we are going to keep plugging away."

Crosby, who had two goals and eight assists in eight games this season before Thursday, heard a mixture of cheers and boos when he hit the ice during pregame warmups. The reaction turned more to boos as the game went along when Crosby had the puck.

Crosby made his season debut on Nov. 21 against the New York Islanders, his first game action since January 2011, and had two goals and two assists in that 5-0 home win. He lasted only seven more games before being shut down again.

He looked to be more relaxed in his play than he was in his first return. Crosby took 18 shifts that totaled 16 minutes of ice time ? exactly the limit Penguins coach Dan Bylsma wanted to hit.

"I was pretty excited last time. I was excited this time, too, but I didn't want to get caught doing too much," Crosby said. "Just making sure I was responsible out there, doing the right things. All those details are important in games like this."

Crosby is expected to play in each of Pittsburgh's remaining games ? including two this weekend at New Jersey and Philadelphia to complete a stretch of three games in four days against divisional foes.

Bylsma laughed off questions earlier Thursday about the potential "problems" that could arise in getting Crosby back into the lineup. A performance like this one from No. 87 should be enough to stop those questions.

"I hope so," he said, again with a laugh. "I am sure there is going to be another one somewhere."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Barack Obama likes to talk about his kids. What parent doesn't?

But Obama isn't just another dad shooting the breeze about his kids' antics in last night's soccer game. He's the president, and he brings up his daughters to explain his thinking on all sorts of combustible national issues.

He's cited Sasha and Malia, now 10 and 13, in discussing everything from the rescue of an American aid worker from Somali pirates to the touchy subject of public access to emergency contraception. His daughters also are prominent in a family photo being used by his re-election campaign.

Most recently, Obama brought up his daughters when asked about conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh's reference to college student Sandra Fluke as a "slut" after she testified that birth control should be covered by insurance.

Obama said at a news conference that he'd called Fluke after Limbaugh made his comments "because I thought about Malia and Sasha, and one of the things I want them to do as they get older is to engage in issues they care about, even ones I may not agree with them on. I want them to be able to speak their mind in a civil and thoughtful way, and I don't want them attacked or called horrible names because they're good citizens."

Invoking his daughters is a way for Obama to bring big issues down to human scale, in a disarming way. It also is a reminder to Americans of the president's photogenic family ? a priceless political asset in an election year.

The Obamas can be fiercely protective of their daughters' privacy in some ways ? complaining if the girls are photographed while out on their own, for example ? but they've been more than willing to keep bringing them up in the national conversation. And to keep them in the minds of voters as the general election approaches.

A few months ago, Obama brought up the girls in talking about the government's decision to keep the Plan B morning-after pill available only to those 17 or older, rather than allowing it to be openly sold on drugstore shelves.

"As the father of two daughters, I think it is important for us to make sure that we apply some common sense to various rules when it comes to over-the-counter medicine," Obama said. He went on to say the drug shouldn't be available for sale to young girls, "and I think most parents would probably feel the same way."

In January, when an American aid worker was rescued from Somali pirates by Navy SEALs, Obama thought aloud about what her father had gone through, and about his own daughters.

"I cannot imagine what he went through ? given Malia and Sasha ? and for him to be able to stay strong," the president said.

First lady Michelle Obama, for her part, frequently brings up her daughters while talking about her campaign against childhood obesity. She often tells about how the girls were starting to get off-track before the family's pediatrician gave her a wake-up call.

On a recent four-state tour to promote her "Let's Move" campaign, Mrs. Obama blended stories about her own family with policy pronouncements, offering tips on how she gets her girls to eat healthy snacks and use good manners at the dinner table. And she probably got a lot of knowing nods from parents after she related that her daughters aren't all that interested in the White House garden "because anything I do they're not interested in."

Douglas Wead, a former aide to President George H.W. Bush who has written a book about presidential families, said it's no surprise ? and no coincidence ? that the Obamas want to showcase "a marriage that functions well and a relationship with children that functions well."

"Everything is calculated at that level," he said, adding that he doesn't blame the Obamas for "showing off a little."

But Wead cautioned that it can be risky for a president to invoke his children when debating weighty policy matters.

"Jimmy Carter got his hand slapped when he did that," Wead reminded.

In his 1980 re-election campaign, Carter brought up his 13-year-old daughter, Amy, during a presidential debate.

"I had a discussion with my daughter, Amy, the other day, before I came here, to ask her what the most important issue was," Carter said. "She said she thought nuclear weaponry ? and the control of nuclear arms. This is a formidable force."

Carter's rival, Republican Ronald Reagan, mocked the answer at a later campaign rally, saying: "I remember when Patty and Ron were little kids, we used to talk about nuclear power."

Obama's on safer footing when he jokes about his daughters to puncture the formality of an event and put people at ease.

When the president visited a Master Lock factory in Milwaukee last month to discuss American manufacturing, he got a laugh from the workers when he told them: "As I was looking at some of the really industrial-size locks, I was thinking about the fact that I am a father of two girls who are soon going to be in high school and that it might come in handy to have these super locks. For now, I'm just counting on the fact that when they go to school there are men with guns with them."

In a similar vein, he told a National Prayer Breakfast last year that he has prayed, "Lord, give me patience as I watch Malia go to her first dance, where there will be boys. Lord, let her skirt get longer as she travels to that place."

The crowd loved it.

But you can imagine Malia groaning, and saying "Oh, Dad."

I?ve been in love with a rock band lately, and my dogs are all forced to hear my terrible singing all the time. Haha! But I?m pretty sure they don?t mind if I feed them well. Today I want to share another story of our charitable weekend trip. This might be the last time we hold this activity because later Miss Dolito?s schedule becomes tighter and tighter. (She has to work to support her own family after all.)

Honey the golden retriever is adopted. The moment we step in their cabin she runs toward us to show hospitality. She wears a very cute red collar with a big bow on it, playing with her favorite little ball, and she?s so thrilled she can?t stop running around.

She stands in front of me and tries to shake hands with me, and says, ?I?m a pretty girl. I?m very happy today!? Yes Honey, we all can see that.

Honey suddenly changes subject and says, ?I never gave birth to a child.?

While Miss Dolito, the other assistant and I are thinking whether she means that she want to have children, Honey?s Mom says, ?Well! I?ve been wondering if she ever gave birth to puppies. Because as you can see, her nipples are big. And she?s adopted so I really want to know about her past.?

?So I?m telling you now.? says Honey. It seems that Mom has been asking this question for a while. ?I tried, but failed.?

Honey lies down and change the subject again, ?I?m too fat; I wheeze much.? The Mom has noticed that, she tells us that Honey not only wheeze much, but also snores very loud when she?s sleeping. Honey adds, ?It?s hard to breathe sometimes. It makes me sick.?

?Thank you for raising me.? says Honey.

Meanwhile Miss Dolito senses that Honey doesn?t think the Mom?s family like her. Honey says unhappily, ?They complain about my size; they say I?m too big. But I?m the smaller one (as a golden retriever).?

Honey says to Mom, ?I?m really thankful to you. So I behave myself and don?t get you into any kind of trouble.? The Mom keeps nodding with a smile. Honey?s words are truly touching.

Honey?s Mom also wants to know whether she was abandoned or she simply got lost; why did she wander on the street? After a hush Honey answers, ?I was abandoned.? and then there?s a few-second pause, ?It gives me headache whenever this question is asked.?

The Mom feels sorry for that, but she?s just dying to know more about dear Honey. She promises not to ask more questions about Honey?s past. But at the same time she finds it interesting that even pets have something that gives them headaches.

Half a minute later Miss Dolito asks Honey?s Mom, ?Are you, uh, like, pampered?? Miss Dolito seems unsure because Honey?s Mom definitely doesn?t look like a pampered girl. But she?s asking because Honey says that she doesn?t like the pampered girl.

?Oh, I think she?s talking about my big sister. She?s a little bit self-centered.? says the Mom. ?I?m fed up with that pampered girl. She?s spoiled, and she has a quick temper.? besides, Honey says, ?And she doesn?t like me. She rules me out and she complains about me all the time. I?m upset.?

The Mom looks surprised and says that her sister does seldom interact with Honey or pet her. But she believes her family do like Honey, just not that deep as she does.

The Mom is trying to comfort Honey, but Honey says, ?But I?m strong. I?m not gonna crash!? The Mom smiles, ?That?s my girl!? says she.

?I?m happy. Because you make me happy, I will make you happy too!? Honey says to her Mom. The Mom is so touched that she keeps saying that she?s gonna cry!

Honey looks at Mom?s friend and says, ?I know you. You?re also a silly girl.? Before the friend can react, she continues, ?You?re silly too. You two are like the saying: Birds of a feather flock together.? Mom and friend burst into laughter. Apparently they know what Honey is talking about.

We ask her why Honey say they?re silly, the Mom tells us that they?re really silly when it comes to relationships. They?re silly to do so much for the wrong guys. Miss Dolito smiles and says, ?We?re planning to hold a trip to Japan, and pray for good relationships to the Goddess there. You wanna join us??

The two girls look at each other and then at Miss Dolito, trying to say something, while Honey interrupts, ?Just do it!? We all laugh hard. Honey is so cute!! Finally, Honey sits in front of the Mom and smiles, ?I have a great time outside of home. Thank you so much!!?

Greenland icesheet more vulnerable than thought to warming

The Greenland icesheet is more sensitive to global warming than thought, for just a relatively small -- but very long term -- temperature rise would melt it completely, according to a study published on Sunday.

Previous research has suggested it would need warming of at least 3.1 degrees Celsius (5.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels, in a range of 1.9-5.1 C (3.4-9.1 F), to totally melt the icesheet.

But new estimates, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, put the threshold at 1.6 C (2.9 F), in a range of 0.8-3.2 C (1.4-5.8 F), although this would have to be sustained for tens of thousands of years.

Greenland is second to Antarctica as the biggest source of locked-up water on land.

If it melted completely, this would drive up sea levels by 7.2 metres (23.6 feet), swamping deltas and low-lying islands.

If global warming were limited to 2 C (3.6 F), a target enshrined in the UN climate-change negotiations, complete melting would happen on a timescale of 50,000 years, according to the study.

Current carbon emissions, though, place warming far beyond this objective. If they were unchecked, a fifth of the icesheet would melt within 500 years and all would be gone within 2,000 years, the study says.

The probe is authored by scientists from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

They say that the risk of total loss may seem remote, given the immense timescale.

But they also warn that their findings challenge many assumptions about the icesheet's stability in response to long-term warming.

Earth's atmosphere has already warmed by 0.8 C (1.4 F) since the start of the Industrial Revolution in the mid-18th century, and carbon dioxide (CO2) that is being emitted today will linger for centuries to come.

The icesheet is vulnerable to a kind of vicious circle, also known as a positive feedback, that cranks up the melt, according to the paper.

Reaching over 3,000 metres (10,000 feet) thick in some places, the icesheet today benefits from the protective effect of higher, cooler altitudes.

But when it melts, the surface comes down to lower altitudes which have higher temperatures, and this accelerates the cooling, the computer models show.

In addition, patches of land that become exposed by ice absorb solar radiation because they are darker and do not reflect the light. As they warm up, they in turn help melt the ice nearby.

"Our study shows that under certain conditions the melting of the Greenland ice sheet becomes irreversible. This supports the notion that the icesheet is a tipping element in the Earth system," says PIK researcher Andrey Ganopolski.

"If the global temperature significantly overshoots the threshold for a long time, the ice will continue melting and not regrow -- even if the climate would, after many thousand years, return to its pre-industrial state."

Congressman Inslee to step down and focus on run for governor

(Reuters) - Representative Jay Inslee said on Saturday he would step down from Congress later this month to focus full time on what is expected to be a tight race for governor of Washington state.

Inslee, a Washington Democrat who has served in Congress since 1999, said his resignation is effective March 20.

He is running against Republican Rob McKenna, the state's Attorney General, in a gubernatorial race to replace Democratic incumbent Christine Gregoire.

Two recent opinion polls showed the rivals in a dead heat, after surveys earlier in the year gave McKenna a clear lead.

"I am excited about focusing full-time on talking about my job-creation agenda and building a new economy for Washington state," Inslee said in a statement.

"We have a great chance to seize our own destiny, build our own industries, and create our own technological revolutions right here at home," he added.

Inslee said he took the decision to step down "very recently" after watching Republican presidential candidates pushing a "divisive social issues agenda."

He said seeing state Republicans pursue plans to slash state education funding was also a factor.

"It was a difficult decision, but what I need to do right now is focus all my attention on talking to people about what's really important - creating jobs and growing our economy," he added.

Inslee announced he would run for governor after Gregoire said last June she would not seek a third term in 2012.

Gregoire has said she is retiring to spend more time with her husband Mike and two daughters.

A Grove Insight poll on March 6 had rivals Inslee and McKenna in a dead heat, each with 38 percent support. And on February 22, a PPP poll had them tied at 42 percent.

They followed polls by Survey USA and Elway earlier in February, which had McKenna leading by 10 and nine points respectively.

Israel Asking U.S. To Upgrade Bombs, Planes For Possible Iran Strike: Official

(Reuters) - Israel has asked the United States for advanced "bunker-buster" bombs and refueling planes that could improve its ability to attack Iran's underground nuclear sites, an Israeli official said Thursday.

"Such a request was made" around the time of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington this week, the official told Reuters, confirming media reports.

But the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity given the sensitivity of the issue, played down as "unrealistic" Israeli reports that the United States would condition supplying the hardware on Israel promising not to attack Iran this year.

White House spokesman Jay Carney, asked whether the Israelis had made such a request to U.S. officials during the visit, said "there was no such agreement proposed or reached" in President Barack Obama's meetings with Netanyahu or his aides.

But when asked if the matter was raised with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta or other U.S. officials, Carney told reporters he had no information on that. "I would refer you to other officials," he said.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that military capabilities came up in discussions between Netanyahu and Panetta but did not elaborate. No deals were struck during those talks, the official added.

Netanyahu made clear to Obama at a White House meeting on Monday that Israel had not yet decided on military action against Iran, the White House has said.

Netanyahu has hinted that Israel could resort to force should Tehran - which denies suspicions that it is covertly trying to develop atomic bombs - continue to defy big powers' diplomatic pressure to curb its nuclear program.

The risk of an Israeli-Iranian war troubles Obama, who is up for re-election in November and has cautioned against sparking greater Mideast turmoil, though he has also asserted that military action remains an option if sanctions fail. A Gulf conflict could send oil prices soaring.

Western powers suspect Iran's uranium enrichment program is aimed at stockpiling fissile material for nuclear weapons. Iran says it is strictly for civilian energy uses.

Portland is 9th in the top ten cities in the country for home improvement, according to Remodeling Magazine.

Helping with ideas is this years Spring Home and Garden show at the Expo center. It?s been a Portland staple since 1947. Kathy Maher and her best friend are do-it-yourself-ers. "We?re going to do the kitchen and bathrooms next," said Maher.

The Spring Home and Garden show runs though Sunday February 26th at the Expo center.

"We see an influx of population growth," said Mitch Stanley, of Stanley Renovation & Design, Inc. the question Stanley is most often asked is, "How much will it cost?"
