Prelates Call on State and Society to Do More

MEXICO CITY, AUG. 29, 2012 (Zenit.org).- The Catholic bishops' commission for social work in Mexico organized a workshop on ways to help victims of violence.

Representatives from a number of dioceses attended the meeting, which was held last week.

From the point of view of the Church both the state and society need to do their part to reduce violence, declared Archbishop Carlos Garfias Melos of Acapulco. Mexico's bishops, he explained, are doing what they can to deal with this grave situation of violence.

The Church' efforts are directed not only towards the victims of violence, but also include an effort to build peace and bring about reconciliation.

Dialogue is needed, the archbishop declared, in order to put an end to the conflicts and to bring about justice and peace.

Mexico continues to struggle against violence in their "war on drugs," under way since 2007. The death toll from the war is nearing the 50,000 mark.

A police helicopter hovered over the 2300 block of Loma Vista Place in Silver Lake on Tuesday afternoon after a? resident reportedly came across three men in her home. But it turned out these guys were on the prowl for real estate,? not laptops, according to the LAPD Northeast Division Twitter feed:

The watch commander at the LAPD?s Northeast Division? said this morning that all he knew about the incident was that no crime had been committed.

Weakening Isaac hovers over water-logged Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Isaac hovered over Louisiana for a third day Thursday, shedding more than a foot of additional rain that forced authorities to hurriedly evacuate areas ahead of the storm and rescue hundreds of people who could not escape as the rapidly rising waters swallowed entire neighborhoods.

The huge spiral weather system weakened to a tropical depression as it crawled inland, but it caught many places off guard by following a meandering, unpredictable path. The storm's excruciatingly slow movement meant that Isaac practically parked over low-lying towns and threw off great sheets of water for hours.

"I was blindsided. Nobody expected this," said Richard Musatchia, who fled his water-filled home in LaPlace, northwest of New Orleans.

Inside the fortified levees that protected New Orleans, bursts of sunshine streamed through the thick clouds, and life began to return to normal. But beyond the city, people got their first good look at Isaac's damage: Hundreds of homes were underwater. Half the state was without power at the one point. Thousands were staying at shelters.

And the damage may not be done. Even more rain was expected in Louisiana before the storm finally drifts into Arkansas and Missouri.

Isaac dumped as much as 16 inches in some areas, and about 500 people had to be rescued by boat or high-water vehicles. At least two deaths were reported.

Five feet of water poured into Musatchia's home before a neighbor passed by with a boat and evacuated him and his 6-year-old boxer, Renny.

He piled two suitcases, a backpack and a few smaller bags onto the boat and said that was all he had left. He abandoned a brand-new Cadillac and a Harley-Davidson.

"People have their generators, because they thought the power would go out, but no one expected" so much water, Musatchia said.

Other evacuees were picked up by National Guard vehicles, school buses and pickup trucks.

Daphine and David Newman fled their newly decorated home with two trash bags of clothing. They have lived in their subdivision since 1992 and never had water in their home from previous storms, not even Hurricane Katrina.

The comparison was common since Isaac hit on the seventh anniversary of the devastating 2005 storm, though the differences were stark.

Katrina was more powerful, coming ashore as a Category 3 storm. Isaac was a Category 1 at its peak. Katrina barreled into the state and quickly moved through. Isaac creeped across the landscape at less than 10 mph and wobbled constantly.

David Newman was frustrated that the government spent billions of dollars reinforcing New Orleans levees after Katrina, only to see the water inundating surrounding regions.

"The water's got to go somewhere," he said. "It's going to find the weakest link."

The sudden call for evacuations so long after the storm made landfall provoked a debate about whether anyone was to blame.

Jefferson Parish Council President Chris Roberts said forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami needed a new way of measuring the danger that goes beyond wind speed.

"The risk that a public official has is, people say, 'Aw, it's a Category 1 storm, and you guys are out there calling for mandatory evacuations,'" Roberts said.

Hundreds of people in lower Jefferson chose to ride out the storm ? and many of them had to be rescued, he said.

Eric Blake, a specialist at the hurricane center, said that although Isaac's cone shifted west as it zigzagged toward the Gulf Coast, forecasters accurately predicted its path, intensity and rainfall. He did say the storm came ashore somewhat slower than anticipated.

Blake cautioned against using Katrina as a benchmark for flooding during other storms.

"Every hurricane is different," Blake said. "If you're trying to use the last hurricane to gauge your storm surge risk, it's very dangerous."

Along the shores of Lake Ponchartrain near New Orleans, officials sent scores of buses and dozens of high-water vehicles to help evacuate about 3,000 people as floodwaters lapped against houses and stranded cars.

The water rose waist-high in some neighborhoods, and the Louisiana National Guard worked with sheriff's deputies to rescue people stuck in their homes.

In LaPlace, a Coast Guard helicopter plucked a couple and their dogs from a home after storm surge gushed into their neighborhood and washed many houses away.

"They used a flashlight inside the house as a signaling device, which made all the difference in locating them effectively," Lt. Cmdr. Jorge Porto said.

Crews intentionally breached a levee that was strained by Isaac's floodwaters in southeast Louisiana's Plaquemines Parish, which is outside the federal levee system. At the same time, water at a dam farther north in Mississippi was released in an effort to prevent flooding there.

Since the storm arrived in the U.S., the first two fatalities were a tow truck driver hit by a tree that fell on his vehicle in Picayune, Miss., and a man who fell from a tree while helping friends move a vehicle. Deputies did not know why he climbed the tree.

Although New Orleans' bigger, stronger levee system easily handled the deluge from Isaac, rural areas beyond the city's fortifications had few defenses.

Isaac "has reinforced for us once again just how vulnerable these critical areas are," said Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu. "We must re-engage the Corps of Engineers on this."

More than 900,000 homes and businesses around the state ? about 47 percent of all customers ? were without power Thursday. Utility company Entergy said that included about 157,000 in New Orleans.

New Orleans' biggest problems seemed to be downed power lines, scattered tree limbs and minor flooding.

In Mississippi, several coastal communities struggled with all the extra water, including Pascagoula, where a large portion of the city flooded and water blocked downtown intersections.

High water also prevented more than 800 people from returning to their homes in Bay St. Louis, a small town that lost most of its business district to Katrina's storm surge.

Even though Isaac was weaker, Mayor Les Fillingame said, "every storm is somebody's Katrina, regardless of the intensity."

TV audiences go social as Republican convention coverage wanes

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Howling wind, driving rain and potential damage in New Orleans from Hurricane Isaac hasn't yet dampened U.S. Republican convention media coverage, but early TV ratings proved only so-so while many people instead "tuned in" to social networks.

Republican fears that Isaac's battering of the U.S. Gulf Coast would steal the spotlight eased on Wednesday, a day after a key speech by Ann Romney, wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, stole the show from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

But the biggest problem for the Republicans was less the hurricane and more dwindling interest in convention-watching by the general public, experts said.

"Isaac is sucking out a lot of the oxygen but that's because there wasn't much oxygen in the first place," said Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, senior fellow at the University of Southern California's Price School of Public Policy. "Voters and certainly the media are aware these conventions have become hour-long infomercials. There is very little suspense."

Ahead of Tuesday, news of Isaac's path toward the U.S. Gulf Coast revived memories of Hurricane Katrina's destruction seven years ago and threw a spotlight on something the Republican Party would rather forget in its convention week -- the botched relief efforts under George W. Bush, the last Republican president.

But even as some networks moved their anchors from the convention in Tampa to Isaac's landfall in New Orleans to cover both events, those interested in politics tuned in to hear Ann Romney personalize her husband and Christie tackle the Obama White House -- whether on TV or the Internet.

Preliminary data from Nielsen Media Research showed that more than 20 million Americans watched TV coverage of the Republican convention on Tuesday night in the 10 p.m. EDT hour when Ann Romney took the stage. By contrast, 37.6 million people watched Democratic President Barack Obama's most recent State of the Union speech.

About half of the convention's TV audience watched on cable news networks, as Fox News took the lion's share with an average 6.9 million viewers - triple its usual audience. About 11 million watched on broadcast networks NBC, ABC and CBS, which reduced coverage this year to just one hour per night.

Comparisons to the equivalent night in 2008 were not available, but TV audiences for U.S. political conventions have fallen steadily in the last 10 years, with the exception of 2008 when little-known Republican Sarah Palin captured attention.

CONVENTION COVERAGE CHANGES

But the story is different on the Web where, social media experts said, Americans are watching the convention differently from four years ago when Twitter and Facebook were little known.

Thousands of people visited social media sites to follow the convention live across Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and YouTube. Topics such as #GOP2012, #RNC and #Romney were high-trending on Twitter, alongside hashtags for Hurricane Isaac.

Judging by both pundits and tweets, Ann Romney's rousing, high-stakes speech lined with simplistic talk of love was a show-stopper, succeeding in its goal major of connecting Republicans with female voters and humanizing husband Mitt Romney.

"I can't remember a better convention speech by a would-be first lady than Ann Romney delivered," wrote David Frum of The Daily Beast. "Ann Steals the Show" ran the headline on The Huffington Post and CNN delivered the caption "Ann Romney wows the RNC" and quoted reaction as "electric."

An opinion piece in The New York Times said she had less impact when comparing herself to mothers struggling to raise children, but connected more in her speech's second half when speaking realistically about her husband privileged background.

Ann Romney gathered the most Twitter mentions of the night, peaking at a high of 6,195 tweets per minute at the end of her speech when her husband joined her on stage.

The Twitter Political Index measuring tweeters' feeling about a candidate on scale of 1 to 100, 1 being not favorable, saw Ann Romney's score rise from 45 to 83 after the speech.

Facebook and CNN's election insights website also showed a 58 percent increase in users talking about Mitt Romney on Tuesday with the number peaking during Ann Romney's speech.

And traditional media outlets such as the Washington Post, New York Times, CNN and Reuters added to social media coverage, live tweeting, Facebooking, blogging, streaming video, and giving former TV watchers more ways to keep up to date.

The Republican National Committee's own live stream on YouTube has attracted 292,000 views since Monday and has some 3,200 subscribers.

Christie's speech was the second most tweeted-about event at the convention Tuesday, peaking at 6,079 tweets a minute.

Unlike Romney, reactions were more mixed. Fox News praised the speech but included debate about whether the governor, who focused more on his achievements in New Jersey than expected, was hard enough on Obama.

Robot drivers of the future may steer clear of potholes, toppled power lines and stray cats thanks to an artificial neural network modeled after the fear-response mechanism in mammals.

The system, called STARTLE, uses existing hardware and sensors to scan the environment for threats. If one is detected, it will cue other systems to deal with it swiftly.

The system is programmed to kick into gear when it notices something abnormal. That could be a pothole, which it focuses resources to steer around, or?a child running out into the street after a soccer ball, prompting it to hit the brakes.

New Scientist has the details:

The design mimics the amygdala, which provides a rapid response to threats. The amygdala helps small animals to deal with complex, fast-changing surroundings, allowing them to ignore most sensory stimuli.

STARTLE was developed Roke Manor Research, a Hampshire, England, based research and development firm that boasts a ?diverse portfolio of products protecting military people and platforms against a constantly changing threat.?

With that kind of background, we can expect to see STARTLE outfitted on tanks and Humvees, but this type of technology will almost certainly find a home in the robot cars destined to soon clog our roadways.?

In fact, similar safety mechanisms are under development at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where robotic co-pilots take over the wheel when it senses a driver is about to crash.

Spain economy did worse than thought in 2010, 2011

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's economy performed far worse than initially thought in both 2010 and 2011, data showed on Monday, suggesting the country may find it even harder to emerge from a recession that threatens to push it into seeking a sovereign bailout.

The economy shrank 0.3 percent in 2010 and grew 0.4 percent last year, according to the revised data from statistics institute INE.

The figures, respectively 0.2 percentage points and 0.3 points below preliminary estimates, prompted a short-lived selloff on Madrid's IBEX share market.

But analysts said they did not believe the data would have an effect on government forecasts for this year's gross domestic product and public deficit, though the market consensus could dip.

"The only revision that these GDP data may cause is changes to private analyst forecasts," Santiago Sanchez, economist at Carlos III University in Madrid, said.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's conservative government widened the official forecast for Spain's 2011 deficit to 8 percent of GDP last December shortly after coming to power, reflecting a slowing economy and chronically high unemployment rates and debt servicing costs.

In May, it estimated the fiscal gap for the year had reached 8.9 percent.

The previous centre-left administration had targeted a 2011 gap of 6 percent.

This year, Madrid expects a deficit of 6.3 percent and a GDP contraction of 1.5 percent, which roughly tallies with the market consensus for both figures.

The International Monetary Fund expects Spain's economy, which slipped back into recession in the first quarter of this year, to shrink by 1.7 percent.

Monday's data "doesn't change the overall outlook for Spain, but it's a further note of concern in the current juncture," said Tullia Bucco, economist at UniCredit.

On Thursday, three euro zone sources told Reuters Spain was negotiating with euro zone partners over conditions for aid to bring down its borrowing costs, though the country had not made a final decision to request a bailout.

Madrid has already agreed to a European rescue package worth up to 100 billion euros ($125.17 billion) for the country's banks, weighed down by a burst property bubble.

INE said Monday's GDP changes were a result of new structural data and revisions to preliminary figures.

The 2011 revision also incorporated slightly weaker exports than first thought, it said.

INE publishes quarterly GDP breakdowns on Tuesday, along with final data for the second quarter of 2012, expected to confirm output fell by 0.4 percent on a quarterly basis.

UniCredit's Bucco said it would be important to look at which quarters were revised most in 2011, which would provide a clearer indication of how the growth outlook for coming quarters might have changed.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger?s claim that the surface at Ralph Wilson Stadium was to blame for Pittsburgh guard David DeCastro?s injury on Saturday night in Buffalo missed the mark in one important respect: Roethlisberger blamed FieldTurf, but the surface at Ralph Wilson Stadium is actually called A-Turf Titan.

FieldTurf is a brand name for a type of artificial surface that many NFL teams use, either in their stadiums or on their practice fields. A-Turf Titan is a different type of artificial surface that the Bills are alone among NFL teams in using at their home fields.

According to the NFL Record and Fact Book, Roethlisberger?s Steelers are among 16 teams that play their home games on grass. The others are the Browns, Texans, Jaguars, Chiefs, Dolphins, Raiders, Chargers, Titans, Cardinals, Panthers, Bears, Eagles, 49ers, Buccaneers and Redskins. Two other teams, the Broncos and Packers, use a blend of natural and synthetic called DD Grassmaster.

After grass, FieldTurf is the next most popular option: The Colts, Patriots, Jets, Giants, Falcons, Lions, Rams and Seahawks all use FieldTurf on their home fields.

In addition to the Bills? use of A-Turf Titan, a few other types of artificial surface are used in NFL stadiums. The Ravens and Vikings use a surface called Sportexe Momentum, the Cowboys use Sportsfield Softtop and the Saints and Bengals use UBU Speed Series-S5-M.

Roethlisberger is one of many NFL players who have expressed concerns about the safety of NFL playing surfaces, and that?s an issue that the league and the union should continue studying. But if Roethlisberger has a problem with the surface at Ralph Wilson Stadium, his problem is with A-Turf Titan, not with FieldTurf.

Struggling to cope, Turkey stops refugees on Syrian border

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey has begun temporarily holding thousands of Syrians on the Syrian side of the border as it struggles to cope with a growing wave of refugees.

At least 2,000 people fleeing violence in Syria were prevented from entering Turkey overnight at one of several unofficial border crossings in the southern province of Hatay, a Turkish official and witnesses said.

"We have run out of space to house these people. We are working to make shelters and when these are completed we will allow these people across," the official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

He said the refugees were being handed food and humanitarian aid through the barbed-wire fence that marks much of Turkey's 900-km (560-mile) border with Syria, and through which tens of thousands of Syrians have scrambled over the past 17 months.

The official said he hoped the refugees would be allowed to cross later on Sunday.

The number of Syrian refugees in Turkey has nearly doubled over the past two months to more than 80,000 and Ankara has already said it is struggling to cope.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said this week Turkey could run out of space if the number went above 100,000 and suggested the United Nations may need to create a "safe zone" inside Syria.

In total, more than 200,000 Syrians have poured into neighboring countries since the start of the conflict, already surpassing a U.N. year-end estimate of 185,000, and Turkey, which has seen the highest refugee influx, is growing frustrated at what it sees as a slow international response.

"The United Nations and others are commending Turkey and neighboring countries for doing a good job housing the refugees but all these comments are actually covering up a crisis," a second Turkish official told Reuters.

STRUGGLING TO COPE

"Our capabilities as a host country are being strained ... we are now struggling to cope," said the official, who declined to be named so he could speak freely on the subject.

He said while several countries had provided some humanitarian aid such as blankets and tents, the overall response had been slow. He said despite pledges being made, Turkey had so far not received any financial assistance.

Many of the latest arrivals have been housed in schools and sports centers but, with the academic term due to begin in a matter of weeks, this is not a permanent solution.

Turkey is rushing to build several new camps but refugees are arriving faster than they can be constructed. This has led to overcrowding, causing disturbances in some camps as tempers, exacerbated by blazing summer temperatures, flare over shortages of food and water.

Officials also say the real number of Syrians that have fled their homes over the past 17 months is higher than the official figures as thousands of wealthier refugees have arrived across official borders and are renting accommodation in cities.

Ankara fears a mass influx on the scale seen during the 1991 Gulf War when 500,000 people poured into Turkey, and says that would be one factor that could drive Turkey to establish a "buffer zone" inside Syria.

But Ankara is reluctant to act unilaterally on what would essentially amount to a military intervention.

The idea of a buffer zone has also gained little traction elsewhere and Ankara has been increasingly vocal in its frustration at the U.N. Security Council and its failure to come to a united stance over Syria.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has said the Security Council's failure was indirectly supporting oppression in Syria, and criticized vetoes by China and Russia of U.N. resolutions as a "fiasco".

Somali elders must select the legislators ahead of the planned election on Aug. 28 of a speaker and a deputy, said the U.N. Special Representative Augustine Mahiga on Saturday.

On August 20, 215 lawmakers were sworn in. It also was the day a new president was to be elected, but those hopes were dashed by political bickering and threats of violence. Somalia has not had a stable government since 1991.

'Cyborg' tissues: Merging engineered human tissues with bio-compatible nanoscale wires

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Harvard scientists have, for the first, time created a type of "cyborg" tissue by embedding a three-dimensional network of functional, bio-compatible nanoscale wires into engineered human tissues.

As described in a paper published August 26 in Nature Materials, a multi-institutional research team led by Charles M. Lieber, the Mark Hyman, Jr. Professor of Chemistry at Harvard and Daniel Kohane, a Harvard Medical School professor in the Department of Anesthesia at Children's Hospital Boston developed a system for creating nanoscale "scaffolds" which could be seeded with cells which later grew into tissue.

Also contributing to the work were Robert Langer, from the Koch Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Zhigang Suo, the Allen E. and Marilyn M. Puckett Professor of Mechanics and Materials at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

"The current methods we have for monitoring or interacting with living systems are limited," said Lieber. "We can use electrodes to measure activity in cells or tissue, but that damages them. With this technology, for the first time, we can work at the same scale as the unit of biological system without interrupting it. Ultimately, this is about merging tissue with electronics in a way that it becomes difficult to determine where the tissue ends and the electronics begin."

The research addresses a concern that has long been associated with work on bioengineered tissue -- how to create systems capable of sensing chemical or electrical changes in the tissue after it has been grown and implanted. The system might also represent a solution to researchers' struggles in developing methods to directly stimulate engineered tissues and measure cellular reactions.

"In the body, the autonomic nervous system keeps track of pH, chemistry, oxygen and other factors, and triggers responses as needed," Kohane explained. "We need to be able to mimic the kind of intrinsic feedback loops the body has evolved in order to maintain fine control at the cellular and tissue level."

Using the autonomic nervous system as inspiration, Bozhi Tian, a former doctoral student under Lieber and former postdoctoral fellow in the Kohane and Langer labs, and collaborator Jia Liu worked in Lieber's lab at Harvard to build mesh-like networks of nanoscale silicon wires -- about 30 -- 80 nm in diameter -- shaped like flat planes or in a reticular conformation.

The process of building the networks, Lieber said, is similar to that used to etch microchips.

Beginning with a two-dimensional substrate, researchers laid out a mesh of organic polymer around nanoscale wires, which serve as the critical nanoscale sensing elements. Nanoscale electrodes, which connect the nanowire elements, were then built within the mesh to enable nanowire transistors to measure the activity in cells without damaging them. Once complete, the substrate was dissolved, leaving researchers with a net-like sponge or a mesh that can be folded or rolled into a host of three dimensional shapes.

Once complete, the networks were porous enough to allow the team to seed them with cells and encourage those cells to grow in 3D cultures.

"Previous efforts to create bioengineered sensing networks have focused on two-dimensional layouts, where culture cells grow on top of electronic components, or on conformal layouts where probes are placed on tissue surfaces," said Tian. "It is desirable to have an accurate picture of cellular behavior within the 3D structure of a tissue, and it is also important to have nanoscale probes to avoid disruption of either cellular or tissue architecture."

Using heart and nerve cells, the team successfully engineered tissues containing embedded nanoscale networks without affecting the cells' viability or activity. Using the embedded devices, they were able to detect electrical signals generated by cells deep within the tissue, and to measure changes in those signals in response to cardio- or neuro-stimulating drugs.

Researchers were also able to construct bioengineered blood vessels, and used the embedded technology to measure pH changes -- as would be seen in response to inflammation, ischemia and other biochemical or cellular environments -- both inside and outside the vessels.

Though a number of potential applications exist for the technology, the most near-term use, Lieber said, may come from the pharmaceutical industry, where researchers could use the technology to more precisely study how newly-developed drugs act in three dimensional tissues, rather than thin layers of cultured cells. The system might also one day be used to monitor changes inside the body and react accordingly, whether through electrical stimulation or the release of a drug.

Are you at risk for heart disease? Check your grandpa?s obit. Having a relative die of heart complications before age 60 doubles your own risk of premature heart disease, according to a new study published in the Journal of American College of Cardiology. Even more: if it?s a parent or sibling, your risk shoots up 72 percent. If there are two or more premature cardiovascular deaths, your risk increases two-fold compared to just one.

Researchers studied the family history of about 4 million people from a public health care database?the largest study to look at the matter?and found the risk to hold true independent of other heart disease risk factors like high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, or diabetes.

?Whenever we see events that occur early in life clustering in families, we tend to think that there must be an underlying genetic contribution,? says Mattis F. Ranthe, M.D., Ph.D. student at Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen, and researcher of the study. More specifically, bad genes are to blame, adds Eric Topol, M.D., director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute, and Men?s Health cardiology advisor.

The only thing is, doctors can?t yet pinpoint just which genes are the bad ones. ?I?ll have patients come in who know they have this issue in the family wondering if they?ll have the same fate,? says Dr. Topol. ?Hopefully in the future we can look at genes and determine which ones could be risk factors.?

Until then, if early death from heart complications runs in the family, it?s time to go into high gear prevention mode, says Dr. Topol. Jessica Hische and Russell Maschmeyer: Love Story Behind Couple With Incredible Wedding Website

As far as wedding websites go, Jessica Hische and Russell Maschmeyer's sets the bar high. When we came across the couple?s intricately designed site -- which doubles as their wedding invitation -- we just had to get the story behind it. (Especially after the site was lauded for its gorgeousness by Glamour magazine and mocked for its hipster twee-ness by Gawker.)

We chatted with Hische, a freelance illustrator, and Maschmeyer, a product designer for Facebook, both 28, over the phone before their August 24th nuptials. Below, the incredibly artistic duo, who met online while living in Brooklyn, NY, share all the details of the romance that led to their stunning site. (As told to Natasha Burton)

Russ: A week after I joined Match.com in 2008, Jess messaged me. She was my first date from the site.

Jess: He was my first, too. Russ? profile had this jokey picture of him staring wide-eyed into the camera with these tiny round glasses on. Any guy who would put that face forward was a guy I wanted to get to know. In my first message to him, I made a joke that I hoped the band he was in wasn?t emo because I?d dated a dude in a terrible emo band at one point.

Russ: I was just relieved I wasn?t in an emo band! Jess sent me a link to her website while we were still in the instant message stage, and I was impressed that she was such an amazing graphic designer. From the start I knew she was both dedicated and talented, and, at that point in my own designing career, I was very much feeling like a student without a real teacher ?- I was excited to pick her brain. Plus, after she sent me a photo of herself, I thought she was totally cute. For our first ?date? I invited her to a show I was playing with my -- non-emo -- band at the Cake Shop, a live music venue and record store in Manhattan.

Jess: Asking a girl show up at a concert alone was a risk. But Russ got to see the independent lady I am -- you can throw me in a room full of strangers and I can get along with just about anybody. And, as much as our first date wasn?t a ?real? date, we probably spent six hours hanging out before and after the show. He didn't kiss me on the first night -- though I wanted him to -- and was extremely kind and gentlemanly. We parted ways on the subway and I couldn't have been more excited to see him again.

Russ: I knew Jess was right for me from the start -- the way she carried herself, what she talked about, the way she related to other people. But the morning after our ?date? I left for a month-long tour. While I was on the road, I wrote her postcards; I wanted her to know that I was still really interested in hanging out with her when I got back.

Jess: The postcards would come at such weird times and he chose such funny ones with totally non-sequiter images on them -- one had a picture of Bruce Springsteen on it. As we wrote back and forth, we were discovering a lot about each other but I felt like I was corresponding with someone I already knew.

Russ: We started dating pretty much right when I got home and everything just progressed so naturally. Apart from the fact that Jess is smart, talented, kind, attractive, and sane, there were a thousand little things that made me fall for her. Like how we had the same sense of humor, and how we both loved and hated the same things; how easy it was to carry on a conversation, how easy it was to be silent.

Two months after I returned from touring, Jess wrote a note on a napkin and emailed it to me, asking if I wanted to make it official. The options were ?Yes,? ?No? or ?Other:________.? It was adorable. I replied with an ornate sketch that read: "Sure, that sounds like fun" and emailed it back. One of the greatest things about our relationship is we both really love what we do, which we?ve always appreciated in one another.

Jess: When I?d dated people who weren?t in a creative field, they didn?t have my same passion: they didn?t have careers, they had jobs. My work isn?t work to me -- even when I?m on the phone, I?m doodling, I just can?t stop myself. I knew automatically that Russ was the same way with his career and I think that?s so important -- if you?re not passionate outside of your relationship, it puts too much pressure on you both.

When Russ first showed me his design work, I was totally surprised and impressed -- he had not really thought of himself as a professional designer, it was something he did to support the band, but his work was really great, especially for someone who had no formal training in design. He understands my enthusiasm and we both push each other to get better.

Russ: After about two years of dating, during which we'd moved in together, we started talking about marriage. But even the night we met, I was already thinking to myself, Man I could totally marry this girl.

Jess: Which is shocking to hear because when I started joking about marriage, Russ would behave in this perfectly aloof way of, ?Oh, yeah, marriage, that?s something that people do ... when they?re adults ... sometimes.?

Russ: I started shopping for engagement rings after I left Brooklyn for a summer internship in San Francisco. At first, doing long-distance was nice, having my own space. But then I just really missed Jess and working together side-by-side. I stumbled upon a simple brushed gold ring online I thought she would be absolutely enthralled by from Conroy and Wilcox. And when I got back to Brooklyn in the fall it turned out that Jess was also looking at rings.

Jess: I was on Svpply, and rings just happened to start coming into my feed because other people were bookmarking them. And then I started bookmarking them...

Russ: And showing me that she?d bookmarked them.

Jess: For the record, I was showing Russ engagement rings with the same level of seriousness as if I, as an adult, was asking my dad for a pony. My parents divorced when I was 14 -- and the situation between them is still quite tense -- so growing up I didn?t so much fantasize about my wedding day as much as brace myself for it. But when I fell in love with Russ that anxiety subsided dramatically. I only bugged him because he made it so obvious that he wasn?t going to propose.

Russ: Since I was a kid, I?ve fantasized about making my proposal an amazing event: I wanted Jess to have that experience of sheer shock so I never let on that was thinking about marriage, too. I began scheming with my friend Jeff -- he worked at my grad school and was able to get a key to Gramercy Park in Manhattan, which is a private park. I thought it would be a beautiful and secluded place to propose.

The last piece of the plan was that Jeff?s wife, Cara, would ask Jess to work on a project with her the day I was planning to propose so she?d be free and Jeff would go early and sit in the park with the key. On the morning of, Cara called Jess while we were having brunch and canceled -- and of course I was right there to suggest that she meet me in Manhattan that afternoon after I?d finished working so we could walk around together.

Jess: It was a gorgeous, 80-degree day and I had it all to myself. I got a last-minute haircut at my salon and I bought a new outfit. I ran into one of my college friends and his girlfriend and we grabbed margaritas before I took the L train into the city.

Russ: I met Jess at 3rd and 14th and, when we got to Gramercy Park, I said something about how beautiful it was and how Jeff had told me the other day that he had a key. And then, I said ?Hey, isn?t Jeff right there? What a coincidence!?

Jess: I am so gullible. I was in the most euphoric, this is the best day ever state of mind with my fresh haircut and new outfit. And I was also slightly ?margarita-ed.?

Russ: We walked toward the east end where it?s more private. Sunlight was coming down through the cherry trees. All of a sudden, Jess spun around and said, ?And this is where you ask me to marry you!? I thought, ?Well, I guess that?s my cue? and I just got down on my knee and took out the ring. She was baffled.

Jess: I can sometimes be a surprise ruin-er with my deductive reasoning skills -- I watch a lot of ?Law and Order.? But I totally thought he was joking.

Russ: The proposal was everything I?d ever hoped it would be as a kid. I loved that, when Jess realized what was happening, she never even looked at the ring. She just said ?Yes!? and tackled me.

Jess: I dove at him and sat on his knee and hugged him while he was still down there. Afterward, I literally could not stand back up -- I kept falling. My pulse was racing and I had to sit for like 25 minutes.

Later, Russ surprised me again. He led me to 26 Seats, a nearby French restaurant, where our closest friends and family members were waiting for us to celebrate. Even my best friend from Philadelphia was there and it hit me just how much planning and preparation -- and love -- went into the proposal. I was a sobby mess. That day, I really understood just how generous and thoughtful Russ was capable of being and it made me even more excited to marry him.

Microwave ovens may help produce lower cost solar energy technology

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? The same type of microwave oven technology that most people use to heat up leftover food has found an important application in the solar energy industry, providing a new way to make thin-film photovoltaic products with less energy, expense and environmental concerns.

Engineers at Oregon State University have for the first time developed a way to use microwave heating in the synthesis of copper zinc tin sulfide, a promising solar cell compound that is less costly and toxic than some solar energy alternatives.

The findings were published in Physica Status Solidi A, a professional journal.

"All of the elements used in this new compound are benign and inexpensive, and should have good solar cell performance," said Greg Herman, an associate professor in the School of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering at OSU.

"Several companies are already moving in this direction as prices continue to rise for some alternative compounds that contain more expensive elements like indium," he said. "With some improvements in its solar efficiency this new compound should become very commercially attractive."

These thin-film photovoltaic technologies offer a low cost, high volume approach to manufacturing solar cells. A new approach is to create them as an ink composed of nanoparticles, which could be rolled or sprayed -- by approaches such as old-fashioned inkjet printing -- to create solar cells.

To further streamline that process, researchers have now succeeded in using microwave heating, instead of conventional heating, to reduce reaction times to minutes or seconds, and allow for great control over the production process. This "one-pot" synthesis is fast, cheap and uses less energy, researchers say, and has been utilized to successfully create nanoparticle inks that were used to fabricate a photovoltaic device.

"This approach should save money, work well and be easier to scale up at commercial levels, compared to traditional synthetic methods," Herman said. "Microwave technology offers more precise control over heat and energy to achieve the desired reactions."

Funding and support for this research was provided by Sharp Laboratories of America, the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute, and the Oregon Process Innovation Center for Sustainable Solar Cell Manufacturing, an Oregon BEST signature research facility.

With weak economy, an opportunity for GOP

One of the weakest recoveries in the last half century apparently remains on track. For many American voters, though, it feels like the recession never ended.

?This is President Obama's imaginary recovery,? Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan told a group of supporters Wednesday in Roanoke,?Va. ?It's not here. ?

The latest evidence came Thursday with the government?s weekly numbers on new applications for unemployment benefits. Though less reliable as a job market barometer than the monthly employment report, weekly jobless claims rose last week, a reminder that?unemployment levels remain painfully high. ?

About the only good news these days is coming from the housing market, which has finally found a bottom after a dizzying plunge from the worst bust since the Great Depression. New home sales perked up again in July, edging up 3.6 percent to a seasonally-adjusted 372,000-unit annual?rate, matching a two-year high seen last July, according to data released Thursday.

The depressed housing market has been a major drag on the recovery. Housing typically provides a major lift coming out of recessions; building a house creates an average of three jobs for a year and generates about $90,000 in tax revenue, according to statistics compiled by the National Association of Home Builders.

Like the overall recovery, though, the housing market?s upturn is painfully weak. Sales of existing homes are expected to rise 8 percent this year to about 4.6 million -- well below the 5.5 million annual sales pace seen in healthy markets.

Sales have been held back by a variety of forces, including millions of underwater homeowners who can?t move. Those who want to buy face tightened credit standards for mortgages, according to a report last month by the Federal Reserve.

The economy is growing at a snail's pace; it slowed to a 1.5 percent annual rate in the second quarter from two percent in the first three months of the year. Last month, the jobless rate last month reversed course and inched up a tenth of a point to 8.3 percent after a steady decline from a peak of 10.0 percent in October 2009.

So it's?no surprise that many Americans share Ryan?s view that the recovery is ?imaginary,? according to conservative pundit Romesh Ponnuru, a senior editor for?National Review?magazine

?Although statistically we are in a recovery, politically we are not in the kind of recovery people actually feel,? he said. ?When you hear from members of the administration and the Democrats that the economy is growing, that's something that just rings false to most people. Because they know they are still hurting.?

Political rhetoric aside, the current recovery pales by historical standards. After four-and-a-half years the U.S.?economy, as measured by gross domestic product, is just 1.7 percent bigger than when the recession began in 2007. By comparison, at this point in recoveries from past five recessions, the economy had grown by between 12.1 percent and 15.6 percent, according to a recent analysis by Credit Suisse economists.

Still, while the economy?s growth rate is anemic by historical standards, most economists don?t see it headed back into recession. If anything, the latest data seem to show very slight improvement, according to Goldman Sachs economist Jan Hatzius.

?The level of activity is unsatisfactory and the growth rate growth is unsatisfactory, but the change in the growth rate I think is actually getting a little better,? he said. ?We?ve seen some positive numbers so we think it?s going to be a little stronger than the very disappointing second quarter.?

Those positive numbers aren?t swaying many voters. Since the recession began, more Americans believe they?ve lost their grip on middle class status, and many of those still hanging on say the recession?has left them worse off financially.

Some 42 percent of those who identify themselves as middle class told the Pew Research Center they?re in worse shape, about 32 percent said they?re in better shape, and the rest either don?t know or see no difference, according to a survey released Wednesday.

Numbers like those are providing a powerful opportunity for the Republican campaign, which heads to Florida next week to officially nominate Mitt Romney as the GOP presidential candidate and Ryan as his running mate, to hammer the president?s economic record.

?As we go into Tampa next week, the message of the campaign has been simplified,? said GOP Consultant Phil Musser. ?They?re talking about five core?themes to get middle class jobs growing."

As the presidential campaign has intensified, the resulting political gridlock has become an even bigger impediment to growth. With Congress deadlocked over?tax and spending policy, businesses, consumers and investors are hunkering down.

?What you?d like to see is that we do not run policy based on this brinksmanship," said Federal Reserve Bank?of St. Louis President James Bullard. "That puts uncertainty sitting out into the future, the markets pull that uncertainty into today, and then that has an effect on the economy today."

The potential damage from ongoing gridlock was brought into focus Wednesday when the Congressional Budget Office offered up its latest analysis on the looming fiscal cliff of tax hikes and spending cuts set to hit?at year's end unless Congress and the White House change course. In its latest report, the CBO estimates that current policies, if left intact, would slam the brakes?on growth -- reversing the weak pace?into a contraction at an annual rate of about a half a percentage point.

?If you compare it to previous recessions, this one that CBO is talking about next year is worse than the one in 2001 or the one in 1991,? said Dave Malpass, former deputy assistant treasury secretary in the Reagan administration. ?It?s more than a double dip. It?s a second big recession.?

Buried in its analysis, CBO researchers also marked down their assumptions for the economy?s ?potential? growth rate in the next three years. The change is in line with an ongoing discussion among economists -- including recent musing by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke on Capitol Hill -- that the economy may be ?stuck in the mud,??thanks to a variety of long-term forces that go well beyond?fiscal or monetary policies.

Those structural changes in the economy, which have been underway for years, include the aging of the U.S. population, a decline in the growth of productivity and the ongoing hangover from the housing bust, among others. Those forces will persist no matter who is elected in November.

The global economy is also slowing as the European debt crisis continues to grind on with no solutions in sight. There is little either presidential candidate can do to insulate the U.S. economy from the fallout at home from a recession in Europe.

Solutions will have to come from Europe?s leaders. But, two years and dozens of meetings and failed plans after the crisis unfolded, there is little indication that a viable fix is in the works, according to Bullard, who recently toured Europe for discussion with leaders there.

?The debate is rancorous. Terms are not defined well. Some solutions are far-fetched. So I?m kind of pessimistic coming away from that discussion. I don?t think the European institutions are really in place to deal with this crisis. I think our best scenario is muddle through and our worst scenario is something worse than that. So I?ve become pessimistic?on Europe's ability deal with this,? Bullard said.

With 10 weeks left in the presidential campaign, though, that outlook doesn?t bode well for the White House.
