Heidi Klum, Seal Divorce: Separation Officially Announced

NEW YORK ? Seal and Heidi Klum have announced that their storybook marriage is coming to the end of the runway.

In a statement Sunday night, the power couple announced their separation after rumors swirled over the weekend that a divorce was imminent.

"While we have enjoyed seven very loving, loyal and happy years of marriage, after much soul searching we have decided to separate," the joint statement read. "We have had the deepest respect for one another throughout our relationship and continue to love each other very much, but we have grown apart. This is an amicable process and protecting the well-being of our children remains our top priority, especially during this time of transition. We thank our family, friends, and fans for their kind words of support. And for our children's sake, we appreciate you respecting our privacy."

The couple married in 2005 and has four children together, including the supermodel's daughter from a previous relationship.

They were one of Hollywood's most high-profile couples, and seemed to have the relationship everyone should envy. They two starred together in the music video "Secret," they renewed their wedding vows each anniversary, boasted of their love in the media, and threw Halloween bashes together where they dressed in outrageous outfits, most recently last year in New York City, where the two engaged in their typical public display of affection for the cameras.

In an interview with The Associated Press in 2007, the "Kiss from A Rose" singer described his wife, who has a tattoo of his name on her arm, as his best friend.

"It is really important that we have that understanding because apart from anything else it is really healthy," he said of the "Project Runway" host. "People often talk about the most important thing in a relationship. They say it is really important that you are turned on by your partner and you love each other, which is all really true.I often think that the most important thing or certainly up there with love is respect."

TMZ first reported on Saturday that the two planned to divorce this week.

His announcement comes as he releases his new album, "Soul 2," on Tuesday, which has songs like "Love T.K.O," "Let's Stay Together" and "Love Don't Live Here Anymore."

Judge orders man to stand trial for Calif. deaths (AP)

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. ? A suspected serial killer will stand trial for the decades-old murders of four Northern California women.

A Marin County Superior Court judge ruled Monday that prosecutors presented enough evidence against 78-year-old Joseph Naso.

Naso is accused of killing two women in the 1970s and another two in the 1990s, and dumping their naked bodies in rural areas.

He was arrested last year, after a probation search of his Reno, Nev., home unearthed photographs, journals and other evidence tying him to the old slayings.

A Nevada State Police investigator testified that he believes Naso killed as many as 10 women.

Naso is acting as his own lawyer. He declined to call witnesses or take the stand during the preliminary hearing. In his closing argument, he called the evidence circumstantial.

S&P ends with minor gains, Dow, Nasdaq slightly off

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Stocks continued their 2012 rally Monday, barely, as the S&P 500 finished slightly higher.

According to preliminary calculations, the Dow Jones industrial average ended down 11.66 points, or 0.09 percent, at 12,708.82. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index rose 0.62 points, or 0.05 percent, to 1,316.00. The Nasdaq Composite Index was off 2.53 points, or 0.09 percent, at 2,784.17.

The major indexes jumped immediately after the opening bell and swooned by midday. They remained lower most until the last two hours, managing to climb back to positive territory.

Developments in the euro zone including the terms of a likely Greek default remained a concern for investors.

Despite the lull, stocks are off to a strong start in 2012. Investors' biggest fears have slowly faded. Stronger than expected job growth in the U.S. and falling borrowing costs for European governments have helped the S&P 500 index post gains on 11 of 13 trading days.

For the year, the Dow is up about 4 percent, the S&P about 4.5 percent. "In our view, optimistic sentiment and lightly traded volume are the two key technical concerns that have raised an early warning flag and indicate that the trend should soon flatten," said Ari Wald, equity analyst at Brown Brothers Harriman in New York.

"Looking ahead to the coming weeks to months, we would be watchful for a new bull market high that goes unconfirmed by our indicators, or if volume on declining days begins to outpace volume on advancing days. This would be a signal for a more meaningful correction.

According to Thomson Reuters data, 15 percent of S&P 500 companies have reported earnings, with 59 percent posting results above Wall Street expectations.

While the percentage of fourth-quarter earnings reports that beat estimates has trailed recent quarters, the rate is expected to improve as earnings season picks up steam. This week 117 S&P 500 companies are expected to report earnings.

Pressuring market sentiment, the euro zone crisis was still lurking in the background. Germany and France pushed for a deal between Greece and its private creditors and said they remained dedicated to a new bailout that is needed by March to stave off a default. Euro zone finance ministers could decide later Monday what debt restructuring terms they would accept.

Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

'The Artist' silent but golden at producer awards (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? "The Artist" followed its Golden Globe win by taking top honors at the Producers Guild Awards on Saturday, as the silent film continues its unlikely run toward Oscar night.

Producer Thomas Langmann received the award handed out at the Beverly Hilton by the Producers Guild of America, as "The Artist" beat out George Clooney's family drama and another Oscar favorite, "The Descendants."

"The Artist" won best musical or comedy at Sunday's Golden Globes and "The Descendants" won best drama along with a best actor nod for Clooney, making the movies likely rivals for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

The other nominees in the movie category were "War Horse," "The Help," "Bridesmaids," "Hugo," "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," "Midnight in Paris," "Moneyball" and another Clooney movie, "The Ides of March."

Along with honors from other Hollywood professional groups such as actors, directors and writers guilds, the producer prizes have become part of the preseason sorting out contenders for the Oscars, whose nominations come out Jan. 24.

HBO's saga of mobsters in Prohibition-era Atlantic City "Boardwalk Empire" won the producers' award for television drama series, keeping AMC's "Mad Men" from winning its fourth straight PGA Award.

A team of seven producers including Martin Scorcese received the award for "Boardwalk Empire," which also beat out Showtime's "Dexter," CBS's "The Good Wife," and another HBO series, "Game of Thrones."

The ABC sitcom "Modern Family" took the award for best comedy series for the second straight year, beating "30 Rock," "The Big Bang Theory," "Glee," and "Parks and Recreation."

Other winners at the PGA awards include PBS's "Downton Abbey" for long-form television, "The Adventures of Tintin" for animated film, "Beats, Rhymes & Life" for movie documentary and "The Colbert Report" for talk and live entertainment shows.

Romney says he'll attend debates in Florida (AP)

GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Mitt Romney says he will attend the next GOP presidential debates in Florida, which is next up on the election calendar.

After last weekend's two debates in South Carolina, advisers to the former Massachusetts governor had said the candidate hadn't committed to any more campaign debates.

But Romney said Saturday, on the day when South Carolinians are voting in their state's GOP primary, that he will be at the Tampa debate, and advisers say he also will participate in the Jacksonville debate on Thursday.

His commitment to the debate might be a sign that he doesn't think he will do as well as first thought in South Carolina against rival Newt Gingrich and will need to continue the fight in Florida.

The Florida primary is Jan. 31.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Mitt Romney is heading into primary day conceding that he'll win some and lose some.

Romney on Friday acknowledged the contest here is "neck-and-neck" and said he expects to lose "some primaries" to rival Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker.

As voters head to the polls Saturday, Romney and Gingrich both planned to appear at the same breakfast restaurant in the morning. Both campaigns refused to change their schedules Friday night, potentially setting up a face-off between the two men ahead of the polls closing.

The past week has been an abrupt reversal of fortune for the former Massachusetts governor, who landed here last Wednesday after a big victory in New Hampshire and what was then a narrow win in Iowa.

But this week the Iowa GOP reversed his win there after problems with the vote count, and he's been dogged by questions about releasing his tax returns. And instead of emerging from South Carolina with three wins and a seeming lock on the GOP nomination, Romney and his team are now acknowledging they could lose here. That would leave the putative front-runner with just one early state win heading into Florida's Jan. 31 primary.

Romney's campaign planned at least two campaign stops Saturday ahead of polls closing. He planned to visit his campaign headquarters and Tommy's Country Ham House, where Gingrich also planned to stop. Romney was to end the day in Columbia, the state capital.

South Carolina Primary Results: Newt Gingrich Upsets Mitt Romney, Shakes Up GOP Race

Mitt Romney was likely never as much of a lock as the mainstream media seems to believe, but Saturday's South Carolina primary results still came as a surprise.

Newt Gingrich rose from the political ashes for the second time with two strong debate performances this week and pulled off an unlikely win in the Palmetto State.

With 40 percent of the vote to Mitt's 27, and nearly all precincts reporting, Newt won big and turned the fluid Republican presidential race on its head once again.

Newt Gingrich Photo

Only a week ago, Romney seemed likely to win all three of the initial contests, a scenario that would have put him on a relatively clear path to the nomination.

But with Thursday’s announcement that Rick Santorum actually won Iowa, followed by today's results, Romney is now a front-runner who has lost two of three.

The result marked a swift, extraordinary turnaround in Gingrich’s fortunes, after he finished well out of the top three in both Iowa and New Hampshire.

So maligned was his candidacy that Newt himself had conceded his campaign might be over for good by tonight if he failed to turn in a strong performance.

He did turn in such a performance, and as such, the quest to represent the GOP against President Barack Obama in November is quite far from over.

This marks the first time that three different Republican candidates have won the first trio of contests in what has been an unpredictable race from the start.

Since 1980, every South Carolina GOP primary winner has gone on to win the nomination, but whether Gingrich can continue that streak is far from certain.

Romney has by far the most formidable financial resources and organization, giving him a big edge Florida, which holds its primary January 31, and beyond.

Santorum finished third and Ron Paul fourth in South Carolina. The candidates square off in a debate once again Monday night in Tampa. Stay tuned ...

High winds are feeding a brushfire near Reno, Nevada that has burned homes and acres of land. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

PFT: Bengals WR Simpson indicted on drug charge

After the home teams went 4-0 in the wild-card round, I decided to ride that wave of bad hospitality, and I picked the home teams to win in the division round.

But for the Giants? 17-point win over the Packers, I would have had a perfect weekend.? Rosenthal, who picked both the Packers and Saints to advance, was 2-2.

So, yes, I won.? For a change.

This week, I agonized over both games.? Tempted to flip a coin, I probably would have been better off if I did.

Not just this weekend, but all year.

Ravens at Patriots

Florio?s take:? Yes, the Baltimore offense looked sluggish against the Texans.? During the regular season, however, the Texans had one of the best defenses in the league.? The Patriots, in sharp contrast, had one of the worst.? Still, can the Ravens muster at least one more point than the New England offense will score?? The internal offense-vs.-defense strife in Baltimore seems to be real, and it could lead to an ugly confrontation on the sidelines if the Pats jump out to an early lead and the Ravens can?t respond.? Also, the Pats? defense quietly is improving.? Throw in the fact that the Patriots would love to give owner Robert Kraft something about which to feel good as he continues to mourn his wife?s passing (Myra Kraft?s initials remain on their jerseys), Tom Brady?s memory of a home thrashing two years ago from the Ravens, and a burning desire by Brady and Bill Belichick to finally get that fourth championship, and it?s hard to envision the Patriots losing.

Florio?s pick:? Patriots 27, Ravens 20.

Rosenthal?s take: This game comes down to two questions. Is the Ravens defense more dominant than the Patriots offense? After watching Houston?s running game push Baltimore around last week, I?m rolling with the Patriots there. Terrell Suggs disappears too often. New England?s tight ends are too hard to defend.? Second question: Does the good Joe Flacco show up this week? All season, I?ve thought a great quarterback would take the Patriots out in the playoffs. New England doesn?t have to face a great quarterback in the AFC. The health of Patrick Chung, Brandon Spikes, Dane Fletcher, and the rest of the Patriots no-names all help make the New England defense competent enough.

Rosenthal?s pick: Patriots 31, Ravens 27.

Giants at 49ers

Florio?s take:? The Giants are the best team remaining, with a high-powered offense to go with a staunch defense.? And I?m inclined to pick them to win, in part because I?ve picked them to lose twice in the playoffs and in part because a clash between the Giants and Patriots in the Super Bowl would generate enormous interest and ratings and page views.? But there?s something intangible, and special, about the 49ers and coach Jim Harbaugh.? All week long, I believed I?d pick the Giants, and that then the 49ers would win.? With rain likely to make it harder for the Giants? passing game to fire on all cylinders, look for that hard-hitting San Fran defense and a potent-when-it-needs-to-be offense to find a way.? Yes, the Giants are the better team.? But the 49ers, I believe, will have more points on the scoreboard when the game is finally over.

Florio?s pick:? 49ers 24, Giants 21.

Rosenthal?s take: Eli Manning has the fourth quarter reputation, but Alex Smith has the seven fourth quarter comebacks. New York?s offensive line is a weakness that hasn?t been exposed the last two weeks, but it will show up on Sunday.? San Francisco can get more consistent pressure on Eli Manning with their front seven and they?ll have the more consistent running game. Counting on Eli to keep converting beautiful low percentage third-and-long throws is a difficult way to win week after week. The 49ers magic will continue.

Rosenthal?s pick: 49ers 24, Giants 20.

TSA apologizes to elderly women searched at JFK

Today the TSA admitted wrongdoing in the search of two elderly women at JFK airport. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

By NBC New York

After insisting its agents acted appropriately in searches of two elderly women at John F. Kennedy Airport, the Transportation Security Administration now admits that screeners violated procedure.

Lenore Zimmerman, 85, and Ruth Sherman, 89, complained they were humiliated by what they perceived to be illicit strip-searches at the airport.

Zimmerman said she was taken to a private room and made to take off her pants and other clothes after she asked to forgo the screening because she worried it would interfere with her defibrillator. Sherman had said she was forced to pull down her pants so screeners could see her colostomy bag.

In a letter obtained by the Daily News, Homeland Security officials acknowledge that both women were searched in violation of TSA policy.

?It is not standard operating procedure for colostomy devices to be visually inspected, and [the Transportation Security Administration] apologizes for this employee?s action,? Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Betsy Markey wrote in the letter to state Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Queens).

Markey did insist, however, that Sherman voluntarily pulled her pants down. She also wrote in the letter that Zimmerman had not been strip-searched, but that scanning her back brace constituted a policy violation and apologized.

Both women, still fuming about their perceived indignities, told the News the federal letter did not accurately describe their full experiences.

Ga child killer dead in jail cell; likely suicide (AP)

ATLANTA ? A 20-year-old maintenance worker who this week pleaded guilty to molesting and killing a 7-year-old girl was found dead of an apparent suicide in his prison cell Thursday, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

Ryan Brunn was found unresponsive at 4:15 p.m. at the state prison in Jackson, spokeswoman Kristen Stancil said. Brunn was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:37 p.m., she said in an email. She gave no other details about how he died.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents were investigating, said agency spokesman John Bankhead. An autopsy will likely be done Friday at the agency's medical examiner's office in Decatur, he said.

Brunn pleaded guilty on Tuesday to Jorelys Rivera's Dec. 2 killing at a north Georgia apartment complex where she lived and he had worked for about a month.

The girl was reported missing after she left the complex's playground to retrieve sodas at her apartment for her friends. Brunn described in detail to the court how he lured the girl into a vacant apartment and sexually assaulted her. He said he was afraid she would tell her parents so he "cut her." When she didn't die right away, he beat and stabbed her.

Then he put her body in a garbage bag and dumped it in a trash compactor at the complex where it was found.

After his guilty plea, a judge immediately sentenced him to life in prison without parole. Brunn also apologized to the girl's family members, who sobbed in the front row of the courtroom when he graphically described how he killed her.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the girl's mother expressed relief Thursday.

"This is the kind of justice that I was expecting for him for all the damage that he made to my little daughter," Jocelyn Rivera said. "Now, I can say that I feel satisfied."

The news of Brunn's death came the same day that Canton officials announced that its police Chief Jeff Lance had resigned after a scathing report found he took a "laid back" approach to the search for Rivera.

Brunn's defense attorney, David Cannon, did not immediately return calls seeking comment. Cherokee County District Attorney Garry Moss also did not immediately return calls.

Lance stepped down after the 17-page review revealed his department of about 50 officers violated several of its own policies and made many mistakes in the search for Rivera, said city manager Scott Wood.

A call to Lance for comment was not immediately returned.

The inquiry said there was little doubt that Rivera was already dead by the time Canton police received the missing child report. But it said if another such report were handled in the same manner, police "may indeed miss an opportunity to save a victim's life."

The review found that the officer who responded to the initial call treated the case as a routine one that "would be solved in the same manner as dozens of other such cases that the agency had handled in 2011."

Local officers arriving to search for Rivera failed to activate their dash-board cameras to record the scene, failed to immediately determine if any sexual predators lived or worked nearby, and didn't report her case to a national registry until almost a day after she went missing, the report said.

The report said Lance didn't arrive at the apartment complex in the town of about 23,000 until around 10:15 a.m. the next morning ? about 17 hours after the child was last seen. When he did arrive, it said he was talking to several other officers about the "Georgia game" and eventually turned the TV to a football game.

"Personnel present at the scene frequently characterized the chief's level of concern as `laid back,'" the report said.

Lance failed to launch a separate criminal investigation or heed advice to process Rivera's home as a crime scene, the report said.

Other problems with the investigation surfaced earlier. A Cherokee County deputy who failed to immediately report seeing drops of blood in an apartment during the search for the girl was earlier ordered to undergo additional training. That was not included in the latest report.

Wood, the city manager, said the review should answer questions that were raised about the department's policies and procedures.

"Although sadly the family must still deal with the heartache and loss of this young child, from a legal perspective the matter has now been fully concluded," he said in a statement.

A Bit Of Friendly Guidance Concerning Investing In Real Estate In ...

I have worked in the real estate field for quite a few years and since I have a great deal of practical knowledge and experience in this field from time to time friends and family will come to me for advice. A friend of mine not long ago approached me asking my suggestions regarding buying real estate in a different country. This is not one of my areas of expertise nevertheless what I did tell them to do was get online and begin doing a bit of research. Find out everything you are able to regarding the location you?re considering buying property in, not only the general location but additionally the development itself if feasible.

My friend has always enjoyed visiting Mexico and once they started researching houses on the market in the Puerto Vallarta area they happened upon a development called Puerto Bahia Villas. So they took my advice and dug deeper, doing an on-line search for Puerto Bahia Villas reviews to ensure that they could see whether other individuals have submitted their opinions regarding this development on the web. The results that emerged in the search engines have plenty of pictures of beautiful buildings and beautiful shots of the ocean and so on in addition to descriptions of all the amenities and things to do within the area.

Just after digging a little deeper my friend located a Puerto Bahia ripoff report post that was a little distressing. Ripoffreport.com is a website in which individuals can visit and voice their particular issues about a specific product, service or business. The person who left the post states that the owner of the development secured the land unlawfully, saying that the land was taken illegally to be able to reconcile a $100,000 loan given to a local woman who was not in a position to pay it off. I don?t have any way of knowing for sure if the report is true but it would definitely give me second thoughts when it comes to investing money in that development.

This friend chose to keep searching and do a little of additional searching and it wasn?t easy to locate a great deal of reliable evaluations. The majority of the results that appear within the search engines are sites which are talking about all the wonderful attributes of the development. However, after looking a little longer my friend did come across some Puerto Bahia complaints from a few other individuals and he has chosen to search somewhere else and perhaps invest in an alternative nearby neighborhood. My friend also thanked me for the guidance to carry out research cautiously and to keep looking after the initial search made the development look like it might be a good location to invest in.

Daily Mirror editor says its reporters may have hacked phones (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Showbusiness reporters at Britain's Daily Mirror might have secretly engaged in phone-hacking in the past, the tabloid's editor told an inquiry on Monday, in an admission that could embarrass owners Trinity Mirror.

Asked at the Leveson Inquiry into press standards whether phone-hacking could have been going on and hidden from him while he was the paper's showbusiness editor between 1999 and 2000, Richard Wallace replied: "It might well have been."

Trinity Mirror's Group Chief Executive Sly Bailey told the inquiry she had not seen any evidence that pointed to the use of phone hacking.

But she added that the media group had not conducted an internal investigation into whether hacking had been going on at Trinity Mirror titles, despite disclosures the practice had been widespread at Rupert Murdoch's rival News of the World.

"You haven't looked have you?" Bailey was asked by the inquiry's prosecutor.

"There was no evidence and we saw no reason to investigate," she replied.

The Leveson Inquiry was ordered by Prime Minister David Cameron last year at the height of a phone-hacking scandal at the News of the World that prompted Murdoch's News Corp. to close the best-selling Sunday tabloid.

The focus of public outrage was at first limited to the Murdoch press but concerns have grown about other titles as the inquiry has heard details from celebrities and journalists of newsgathering practices elsewhere.

The Daily Mirror has always said its journalists worked within the law.

Wallace told the inquiry he was not aware of phone-hacking on the showbusiness desk but did not always know the source of stories.

Asked whether an exclusive Daily Mirror story in 2002 about an affair between then-England soccer manager Sven-Goran Eriksson and TV presenter Ulrika Jonsson could have come from phone-hacking, he answered: "It's possible, yes."

Wallace was head of news at the paper at the time.

James Hipwell, who was a financial columnist for the Daily Mirror until he was fired for illegal share dealing in 2000, told the inquiry in December that phone-hacking had seemed to be "perfectly acceptable" to some of the senior editors.

Wallace took over as editor of the paper in 2004 after Piers Morgan, now host of a chat show in the United States, was dismissed for publishing hoax pictures that purported to show Iraqi prisoners being abused by British soldiers.

Morgan has denied phone-hacking but boasted in 2006 of having listened to a voicemail left by Beatle Paul McCartney for his future wife, Heather Mills.

Wallace said he had not heard the message nor had he heard any talk of it at the time.

Trinity Mirror says it has carried out a review of its editorial controls and procedures and has obtained written confirmation from its senior editorial executives that they had not engaged in phone-hacking or bribery.

Good Reads: Predicting the end of history and the fall of China

Year-end pieces predicting future events may seem like just so much guesswork, but looking deeply at present events and guessing where they will go is part and parcel of journalism.?

By the time that giant glass ball descends over Times Square each year, most news organizations have already printed their assessments of the year?s great events. One magazine, Time, takes this time to name its Person of the Year, and often names a category of persons (?the Protester?) or even an inanimate object (?The Computer").

Articles that look back may feel subjective, but articles that predict the future tend to be absolute fluff, dodgy guesswork, or complete genius. Good arguments and persuasive evidence aren?t always a good guide for telling one type of article from the next. The best one can do is read selectively, keep a mental scorecard, and strut in front of friends when one of the articles turns out right.

Arab Spring? Yeah, I knew that would happen.

Predicting the future is risky business, but it?s also incredibly valuable. Fortune 500 companies pay big money for ?economic intelligence? to help them plan for the next big thing. Governments assemble expensive spy networks to keep one step ahead of their enemies, and two steps ahead of their friends. Ordinary citizens can do all this too, by reading the news. And here are a few decent places to look.

Foreign Affairs. Yes, it looks incredibly stodgy, its pale blue cover untouched by designers since the cold war. But when it comes to far-out futurism, Foreign Affairs is the Rolling Stone of international relations. When Samuel Huntington wrote his ?Clash of Civilizations? piece in the summer edition of Foreign Affairs in 1993, he predicted the broader outlines of September 11, 2001.?

This month, Foreign Affairs has published a veritable Pirelli?s calendar of wonkish delight with its collection of ?Eleven Foreign Policy Insights.? Check out Stewart M. Patrick?s piece from this list, called ?How does the debt debate affect foreign aid?? Even though the article was originally published in July of 2011, it still reads like today's news, and it suggests a decline in US influence abroad. ??

While it?s easy to dismiss a piece because of its failure to predict events ? as many do with Francis Fukuyama?s 1989 ?End of History? piece in the National Interest ? such articles still have value in looking at present events and drawing trajectories into the future.

(AP) ? Will Smith will host Nickelodeon's 25th-annual Kids' Choice Awards.

Nickelodeon announced Wednesday that 10-time winner Smith will host the March 31 ceremony from the Galen Center in Los Angeles. The show will air live on Nickelodeon.

Smith calls the awards "the year's liveliest, slimiest and most outrageous party for kids and teens." The actor recently finished filming "Men in Black III."

The Kids' Choice Awards honor kids' favorites in film, music, sports and television by tallying the votes of kids online and via mobile devices. During the show, green slime is routinely dumped on celebrities and winners receive trophies shaped like blimps.

APNewsBreak: UN visit to Tehran set for Jan 28 (AP)

VIENNA ? A senior U.N. nuclear agency team will visit Tehran on Jan. 28 with Iran saying it is ready after years of refusal to discuss allegations that it was involved in secret nuclear weapons work, diplomats said Thursday.

Diplomats have previously said that International Atomic Energy Agency officials were discussing such a trip with their Iranian counterparts. But before the diplomats' comments Thursday, no date ? or indication that Iran was ready to talk about the allegations ? had been mentioned.

Any follow-through on the part of Iran on its reported pledge to discuss nuclear arms suspicions would be significant.

For more than three years, Tehran has blocked IAEA attempts to follow up on U.S. and other intelligence alleging covert Iranian work on nuclear arms, dismissing the charges as baseless and insisting all its nuclear activities were peaceful and under IAEA purview.

Faced with Iranian stonewalling, the IAEA summarized its body of information in November, in a 13-page document drawing on 1,000 pages of intelligence. It stated then for the first time that some of the alleged experiments can have no other purpose than developing nuclear weapons.

Iran continues to deny the charges and no change in its position is expected during the Tehran talks with IAEA officials. But even a decision to enter a discussion over the allegations would be a major departure from outright refusal to talk about them ? and create hopes of future progress in the investigation.

Two diplomats told The Associated Press that Iranian officials had suggested they were ready to talk about the issue during recent meetings with officials of the Vienna-based IAEA. They asked for anonymity because their information was confidential.

Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran's chief IAEA delegate, declined to be drawn on what would be discussed in Tehran, indicating in comments to The AP that it was too early to go public with details.

The composition of the IAEA team, as described by one of the diplomats, also reflects the significance the U.N. nuclear monitoring agency attaches to the visit, which is expected to conclude in the first few days of February.

Normally such trips are made by Deputy Director General Herman Nackaerts, in charge of the Iran nuclear file, and more junior officials of his department. But the diplomat said that this time Nackaerts will be accompanied by Assistant Director General Rafael Grossi, the right-hand to IAEA chief Yukiya Amano, and Peri Lynne Johnson, the agency's senior legal official.

Johnson is the only American among the three. While IAEA officials are formally neutral, her citizenship is of potential significance considering the high tension-level between Washington and Tehran.

Beyond the dispute over Iran's nuclear intentions, U.S.-Iranian relations have been further burdened by an Iranian announcement that a joint U.S.-Iranian national will be executed after being found guilty of spying ? a charge both he and Washington denies.

Iran, in turn, sees possible U.S. complicity in a series of assassinations of its nuclear experts ? the latest Wednesday, when scientist Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan was killed by a bomb attached to his car by a passing bicyclist.

In a letter to the U.N. secretary-general on Thursday, Iran's U.N. Ambassador Mohammad Khazaee called on the U.N. to condemn the killing and two earlier attacks that left two nuclear scientists dead and another seriously injured.

"There is firm evidence that certain foreign quarters are behind such assassinations. As has been claimed by these circles, such terrorist acts have been carried out as part of the efforts to disrupt Iran's peaceful nuclear program, under the false assumption that diplomacy alone would not be enough for that purpose," the letter read in part.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton denied any U.S. role in the slaying and the U.S administration condemned the attacks. Israeli officials, in contrast, have hinted at covert campaigns against Iran without directly admitting involvement.

Beyond urging Iranian cooperation with the IAEA probe of the alleged weapons work, the U.S. and its allies are pressuring Iran to halt uranium enrichment, a key element of the nuclear program that dozens of nations suspect is aimed at producing atomic weapons. Uranium enriched to low levels can be used as nuclear fuel, but at higher levels it can be used as material for a nuclear warhead.

Iran denies it is trying to make nuclear weapons, saying its program is for peaceful purposes only and is geared toward generating electricity.

Those claims were called into question on Monday when the IAEA confirmed Iran had begun increasing its production of uranium enriched to 20 percent. That's a significantly higher concentration than the nation's main stockpile ? and can be turned into weapons-grade material more quickly than the lower enriched uranium.

Olli Heinonen, Nackaert's predecessor, noted that "if Iran decides to produce weapons-grade uranium from 20 percent enriched uranium, it has already technically undertaken 90 percent of the enrichment effort required."

"This does not automatically mean Iran will be able to build a nuclear weapon in one month ? building an atomic bomb is a complex endeavor that requires precision engineering capabilities that Iran may lack," wrote Heinonen, in a commentary for Foreign Policy magazine. "But it does mean that the country would be able to 'break out' of its international obligations very quickly should it decide to do so."

New York City Opera announces musician lockout (AP)

NEW YORK ? A bitter contract dispute has led to a lockout of musicians at the New York City Opera, a possible "death knell" for a company that's nurtured such singers as Renee Fleming, Placido Domingo and Beverly Sills.

On Sunday, hours after talks broke down, the cash-strapped company canceled Monday rehearsals for a Feb. 12 opening production of Verdi's "La Traviata" in Brooklyn.

"This is a very sad day for what once was a spectacular cultural icon and for the people who performed its music," said Alan Gordon, national executive director of the American Guild of Musical Artists representing the chorus, stage directors and principal singers.

Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians represents the orchestra. Both unions have been without a contract since the spring.

Gail Kruvand, chairwoman of the orchestra union's negotiating committee and its assistant principal bass player, said union members "made a good-faith effort to say that, yes, we are willing to sacrifice for the sake of ensuring that the grand tradition of the City Opera lives on."

But she said the company's rejection of union proposals could be "the death knell for one of New York's cultural treasures."

City Opera is now operating on a shoestring, offering orchestra and chorus members minimum fees for an already abbreviated season. City Opera moved out of its longtime home at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts last year, citing financial troubles, and cut back a schedule of 12 to 16 operas in a season, with a peak of about 130 performances.

In a statement, the company said it had "no choice but to lock out" union members because they rejected the company's economic offer and had threatened to strike when performances began, according to a statement released Sunday. Both labor unions have passed strike-authorization votes.

City Opera General Manager George Steel said his company couldn't enter rehearsals with a musician strike looming for performances scheduled in February at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, one of the various venues around New York booked for 16 shows of four productions.

However, "we have no intention of hiring replacement workers," company spokeswoman Risa Heller said. She didn't know whether that meant the season wouldn't open next month.

The opera and the unions have been in talks with Allison Beck, deputy director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, since mid-December. Those negotiations broke down Saturday night.

The musicians say they rejected the company's offer, saying the financially diminished company doesn't guarantee work or pay. Steel says the company, facing "economic constraints," can only afford to pay people "for the work that they do."

Under a contract management proposed in early December, the musicians' average annual income would drop from about $40,000 to as little as $5,000 for two productions. For decades, musicians were guaranteed at least 22 weeks' work.

City Opera's troubles started about a decade ago with multimillion-dollar deficits, followed by the appointment of Belgian director Gerard Mortier as general manager and artistic director, effective as of the 2009-2010 season. Accustomed to staging expensive, cutting-edge extravaganzas in Europe, he insisted that City Opera's theater be renovated, forcing the company to go dark for the 2008-2009 season, with only six unstaged performances elsewhere.

The economy's free-fall was a last straw for the 69-year-old company that former New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia dubbed "the people's opera."

Income from ticket sales during the dark season plunged to about $186,000, down from $12 million. And the company raided its endowment to the tune of tens of millions of dollars.

Mortier resigned from his position about six months before he was officially to start, on grounds that the operating budget had dwindled.

"We're heartbroken, but we cannot save the company," said Kruvand, the bass player.

She said City Opera has been "unable to sell tickets or attract donors" ? mostly because Steel abandoned the company's longtime practice of staging surefire operas along with pioneering new works. Recently, the company has presented mostly 20th-century operas that are a box office challenge.

Kruvand noted that the current general manager still makes more than $300,000 after a 10 percent pay cut, while the musicians face about a 90 percent cut in earnings.

"We don't feel George Steel is capable of running an opera company," said Kruvand, adding that when the star soprano Sills became general manager in the 1980s, she led a company "that was a platform for nurturing careers."

Speaking for Steel, Heller said that the unions "have repeatedly vilified George."

But the negotiating process is "not about any one person," she said. "This is about whether the unions will finally recognize that the City Opera needs to make fundamental changes in the way it operates so that it only pays people for work they perform."

Gordon, the union leader, called the latest labor impasse "City Opera's death."

London European Liberals meeting ``important``, Minister says

London European Liberals meeting ``important``, Minister says ? Monday?s meeting in London of European Liberals is important for Europe, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism and President of the Cyprus United Democrats party, Praxoula Antoniadou, has said.

Antoniadou will take part in a meeting of Liberal allies from around Europe to promote Britain?s agenda of re-engagement with the European Union, after the UK vetoed an EU treaty in December.

``This is a substantive and important discussion on the future of the European economy,`` Antoniadou told CNA, adding the British Liberal Democrats are in favour of a European fiscal discipline only with regard to the solidarity among EU member-states and growth.

On the sidelines of the meeting, she expects to have the opportunity to brief her interlocutors on recent developments in Cyprus with regard to energy matters.

It was a parade of champions in Texas Hill Country Saturday.

The City of Bee Cave hosted a parade for Lake Travis High School athletes. The Lake Travis football team?s recent 22-7 victory over Midway High School grabbed the school its fifth consecutive 4A Division I State Championship.

Saturday gave the players the chance to celebrate the historic win with the community, but the accolades were not reserved just for the football players. Lake Travis High School?s volleyball was also honored at the event. The volleyball team ended 50 ? 0 and earned its second state championship.

?We have the football players here with the volleyball team. We?ve got some tennis, we?ve got some golf, we?ve got some national merit scholars and so the whole Lake Travis community will be out here today and it?s a great day,? Hank Carter, Lake Travis head football coach, said.

Carter told YNN that Saturday was a day to celebrate, but starting Monday morning, focus will be set on winning the teams sixth state championship.

PayPal tests in-store payment system at Home Depot

NEW YORK (AP) ? EBay's PayPal service is testing out a payments system in brick-and-mortar Home Depot stores.

PayPal spokesman Anuj Nayar said Friday that the system is being tested in just five stores and involves a small number of PayPal employees. That means it's not available to the general public and likely won't be for some time.

The move is part of eBay's strategy to expand beyond the desktop computer into mobile devices and other aspects of everyday life.

EBay CEO John Donahoe had mentioned the plans in October during the company's earnings conference call. But he did not say which retailer was participating.

To pay using PayPal, customers will be able to enter their phone number and a pin code, or use a special PayPal card.

Bob Kerrey, Former Nebraska Governor, Considers Run For U.S. Senate

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Former Nebraska governor and senator Bob Kerrey said Friday he's exploring a possible run for the U.S. Senate.

Kerrey, a Democrat, said he'll come to a decision quickly on whether to pursue a bid in 2012. The deadline to declare candidacy for the spot is March 1.

Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson, who currently holds the seat up for re-election this year, said last month he would not seek re-election. Kerrey said, at the very least he plans to spend more time in Nebraska.

Attempts to reach Kerrey by phone and email were unsuccessful on Friday.

The 68-year-old Kerrey represented the state in the U.S. Senate for 12 years until 2001.

Nelson, the lone Democrat in Nebraska's five-member congressional delegation, faced a tough re-election campaign against a large group of Republican challengers who have spent the past several months attacking his support for President Barack Obama's health care overhaul and federal stimulus legislation.

Democrats have acknowledged the party will face a steep uphill battle to hold on to Nelson's seat, but pointed to a crowded GOP primary field with no obvious front-runner. The ticket includes Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning, state Treasurer Don Stenberg, state Sen. Deb Fischer, and investment adviser Pat Flynn.

Nelson first was elected to the Senate in 2000, defeating Republican contender Don Stenberg to replace the retired Kerrey.

Adaptu Wallet for iPhone

Adaptu Wallet for the iPhone, a temporarily free app, is the closest thing to a mobile wallet I've ever tried. Not only does the app display your latest account balances in real-time and send you bill reminders, like the Editors' Choice-winning iPhone app for Mint.com or the popular Pageonce app, Adaptu Wallet also tracks loyalty programs, forecasts your spending, and lets you photograph and store images of all the loose ends in your wallet, like your insurance, Social Security, and business cards. All of this sits under bank-level security.

But while rich in features, Adaptu Wallet isn't as navigable or user-friendly as Pageonce or Mint.com's iPhone apps. More on that below.

Getting Started
Adaptu offers a couple ways to get started. You can either sign up at Adaptu.com first, fill out your profile, and then launch the app, or you can download the app first and create an account through your mobile device. I prefer signing up at the website since it's easier to fill out all those questions about your financial profile. Once you can start the app, you're asked to set up a 4-digit numeric PIN.

After that, it's time to set up your accounts. Adaptu has established relationships with major U.S. players in the following categories: banking, cell phone carriers (for billing alerts), credit cards, investments, loans, mortgages, and rewards programs. My yuppie lifestyle easily integrated into this app: I found it a snap to link to my Citibank, Verizon, Netflix, Delta Skymiles, Starbucks Rewards, and PayPal accounts. Pageonce offers many more service providers, like Time Warner Cable, Comcast, and conEdison.

The app takes a few minutes to connect to these vendors and automatically imports all your data, from balances to bill deadlines to credit limits. It displays this cleanly on the startup screen. Like with other apps, it automatically categorizes your transactions and lets you manually input cash payments. Now, it's on to making sense out of this information.

Suze Orman in your wallet
Adaptu's marketing folks liken their app to having Suze Orman, the screaming host of Can You Afford It? in your pocket, and I couldn't have put it better. The app takes stock of all your past spending behavior and income to create present and future forecasts of your monthly income and monthly expenditure, with the aim of helping you make smarter purchasing decisions at the point of purchase. On the home screen under My Wallet, tap See Cash Flow to view your monthly cash flow; tilt the app horizontally for a three-month flow. You can set your total monthly budget within the app using a rather clunky slider, although I'd prefer to manage this from the Web application.

The cash flow charts are determined by looking at your previous month's income and spending habits (labeled as need-based or want-based) and predicting this month's income and expenditures. Ultimately, you're supposed to refer to these charts anytime you want to buy a big ticket item, to determine whether you can afford to do it now or if you should wait.

These charts are useful if you take the time to classify your transactions as need-based or want-based and your monthly income is consistent enough to create an accurate forecast. I really liked visualizing my balance and income in coming months. However the OCD side of me recognized that in order to create an accurate cash flow chart, I'd have to go through all my transactions and classify them accurately. Fortunately, Adaptu lets you do this within the app.

In fact my biggest gripe about Adaptu's app is the Web application itself, which you'll use frequently to manage features with the mobile app. It's chock full of valuable information, budgeting software, and financial planning advice, but none of this is clearly organized. For instance when I was first starting out I wanted someone to guide me through the setup process. So I clicked Getting Started, and was brought to what looks like a discussion board with topics like "how to set pay day for budget?" and "Biweekly income budgeting vs. Monthly." Not helpful. The same thing happened when I clicked on sub categories within the toolbar?I was redirected to a discussion board.

Security
The Adaptu Wallet iPhone app is more secure than my physical wallet. Like most finance and banking apps, Adaptu doesn't store data in the device itself to prevent outsiders from recovering the data in case your phone is lost or stolen.

Adaptu says its app uses "bank-level security," which means information is encrypted with AES 256-bit and verified by TRUSTe, VeriSign and MacAfee. The app also forces users to enter a PIN at every login and any time the app goes on standby mode after a minute. It's annoying, but reassuring.

Should You Adapt to Adaptu?
Adaptu Wallet for the iPhone is an ambitious little app that packs many unique features, like spending forecasts, keeping track of loyalty programs, and storing photos of all the minutiae you stuff in your wallet. All this app needs is a card processor and I'm ditching my physical wallet for good. It's not as user-friendly as Mint.com for iPhone, our Editors' Choice in the financial management category, but it's a very promising start for the year-old startup. Get it fast, as Adaptu's marketing folks informed me that they plan to start charging for the app to keep it ad-free.
